I've been after a project base to build a Tot rod with my children for ages and looked at allsorts of things from mobility scooters to lawn mowers then a couple of weeks back I came across this...... as the sticker says its a Speedwell supakart, very sturdy and built by Speedwell Enterprises in Slough quite some years ago, there ends my knowledge of any background info.power comes from a 12v leisure battery and it is capable of 4-8mph at present. I've started sourcing parts, modifying the chassis and electrics to turn it into a Radio Flyer wagon rod, initial testing proved it can carry my son and daughter and myself at full speed with little effort so whilst it may not be too fast at present it certainly has torque!! this was the inspiration for the projects current direction. I've lowered the top load member to create some rake in the body to match the chassis and lowered the front end too,all the tyres and tubes are shot so new ones are on their way which will give me time to fix up the wheels. the early mock up looks like this,I've shortened the emergency break lever by about 9in' and intend to top it with a skull gear knob when it arrives from China. in time I'll get all of the electrics under the tray away from sight and fingers, the buggy obviously had a hard life and much of it needs fettling to make good. as you can see from the components it was built as a 'theme park' ride-on for heavy use rather than a toy so it may well be robust enough for a Briggs and Stratton motor in the future, for now we are moding and making good to have fun with it

Nice base, makes like a lot easier. Indeed it does,I'm not a welder though I do intend to learn one day so,a solid base makes this project much more achievable in the sort term. many of the parts have seen better days..... the tyres are shot and sadly two of the Nylite wheels have been drill out so I'm looking at ways to over come the missing bolt issue or find replacements. I've reconditioned and painted the good ones,it's a shame they've hand such a kicking it would appear they were high end in go-karting circles.... note the amount of paint in the bearing cups,it's so thick that the bearings couldn't turn!! hopefully over they weekend I'll get more time to tinker

I've found refusing to grow up to be good enough reason to build stuff like this and we had children WIN-WIN! top idea with the wheels BTW,one for the future I think...... I've been busy on lots of projects inc; holidays, our garden and the Tiki-Mobile so progress has been a little slow.I've made new brackets to hold the electrics and stowed them all within the chassis and the wagon tray now sits on top. the mock up looks like this.I also plan to shorten the frame by 12" and make the steering column vertical, all in good time though. I'll be making it all work again first before anymore major mods.

Sent you a message about this, rebuilding one to OE myself for the lad, shame the above pics aren't working as they'd have helped tonight on attempting a quick wire and test drive
Did you finnish it in the end?

Bryan So mine is the absolute spitting image of you'rs in the first pic. Seemingly completely original bar it has zero wiring, I never thought this a big deal till now I've put a 12v car battery in, the motor has 2 wires coming out of it I assume to be positive and negative and indeed with a test piece of wire I can get it all turn over and switching positive and negative round I can get it spin backwards There is however no other electrical items on it bar the light units with their spade connections and two toggle switches, one either side of the seat with one unmarked and one marked forwards / Neutral / Reverse. No wiring connected to each. There is also a sticker on steering wheel suggesting speed but again no switches or wiring Had a sparkie glance over it earlier and he thinks I need a mutlipole switch to be able reverse polarity for forward and reverse and he thinks there needs to be a pedal of some sort to drive it and with speed control to slowly build the power in... Thanks in advance Wayne

Pictures as Promised; 😁 Details... The speed controller is in the centre of the steering wheel, stop,go and fast. The 3 way toggle switch is off, foward and reverse with off being the centre position. The long lever is an emergency break/cut off which locks the back end too. It has tremendous torque and goes about 8mph even loaded.we modified the frame and moved the electrics to make it sleeker and else easy to damage without the body on. Hope this helps... Regards Bryan

I cannot thankyou enough for taking your time out to go and photograph it for me, it's looking lovely and retro and nice to see it being used big anything like mine that's a rarity, mine apparently not even been touched for some 20 years
Only reason I'm keeping body is I plan to fit a mini shell when one becomes available for right money, the shape of it currently is quite cumbersome and far from light so I can see why ditching it is advantageous
On the wiring front you have shown me just how screwed I am
Pic 2 I don't have. I assume it just an unplugable battery lead so as to plug a charger in so not a big deal
The rear part however with what looks like two coil packs with battery leads connected? I don't have them or the wiring. And I also don't have what they appear to connect to on the driver's side rear which I assumed connects on to the keyway that's machined into the end of the motor drive spindle. ?
No trigger switch on brake lever either but I can get one of them easy enough as I imagine same as as a NOS activation switch which I've done before
Steering control sounds interesting and not something I can quite fathom out as there looks no space for a speed controller bourd for it to attach to, actually thinking about it I don't they even had controller bourd in them days 🤣
Thankyou so much.
Wayne.

it's overengineered in so many ways to me,I guess because it was made for the theme park market and it needed to be robust. the body was very thick fiberglass very heavy too, also oversized and cracked. I've been impressed by what it will put up with in use,I guess that is the pay off. good luck with your project,I'll be happy to help if I can with more details of mine. Relays and switching, the speed control on the steering is a progressive trigger/lever like you would find on Scalextric

Hey mr tiki hope your well I wanted to ask where you got your speedwell supa kart from as I am looking for one myself thank you. Hi, we found it on Ebay,it was a fun project.we had our fun and sold it on.if we were to do it again I think mobility vehicles are a good platform to start from, the kart was over engineered or our needs and very heavy. Good luck with your search! Bryan
