Help me with ideas - he has around £8k for the right car...
He wants something with a nice classic aggresive shape such as a manta a or 260z/280z....
Has to be usable - no 10mpg but otherwise ok with 3.0 etc just not huge v8s
Ready to go and motd with minimal jobs to do
Looking for a 2+2 sort of thing and hes tight so tax emempt is a plus but not essential....
Ideas at the ready

A Scimitar seems to fit that wish list quite nicely

Volvo P1800ES, damned sexy, although 8k might be pushing it a bit from a quick trawl around (one below is for sale on carandclassic)

Capri?
You'll get a good 2.8/ less good 3.0S for £8k. Could get a Mk1 if you're hung up on it being tax exempt, but prices are hit and miss there...

Opel Monza, what's not to like, comfortable, has road presence, makes a nice noise, and can mix it if required.

You want a BMW E23 635 CSi.
Very useable, 220 bhp, stunning lines, amazing straight six engine, plenty of room, massive motorsport pedigree, that super aggresive sharknose, plenty to choose from.
£8k should find you a decent 635 CSi on a private sale, be very careful with 'bargain' £2-5k cars, many will be moneypits! Look out for rare manuals, they're about if you're lucky!
I owned one, wish I'd never sold it!

Good call. Hadn't thought of that. I still see them as £250 bargains rather than nice £8k cars. 8k should get you between 4 and 10 useable ones or 2 really, really nice ones or one massively overpriced one. Not very tax exempt. Sent from my boss' garden using proboards

Howbout a mk1 scirocco? Should pick up a tidy one within budget (although you may have to wait as they don't exactly pop up daily)

Hes liking kharman ghias at min Nice cars but they hold their value so he won't get the best for £8K, (OK if he's buying a car to improve). You haven't said if he favours a particular era? People have suggested Gilbern / Reliant Scimitar. As much as I love them personally, (my Dad is on his 2nd Gilbern Genie), I'm acutely aware of the fibreglass bodywork maintenance issues; flexing / cracking / crazing / osmosis means you need periodic full body restorations & respray, (£5-8K!!) For the same reason I'd avoid other prestige fibreglass cars like TVR. Other ideas:- Not frugal but not too thirsty if driven sensibly, (these are on with dealers so you'd get a better car for £8K if you bought privately). BMW 635 CSiJaguar XJ-S 3.6LMitsubishi 3000GT
