Hello. I've been posting on this forum for over a decade now, but have been away for a long time. I'm not sure if my new purchase counts as "retro", being from the 90's, but it's design and technology are straight from the 70's. It's a Volvo 940 turbo diesel, fitted with the 2.4 straight-six diesel engine from the old VW LT vans, but with a turbo and intercooler. The engine is not to be confused with the later 2.4 5-cylinder VW diesel engines, this is the last of the rear wheel drive Volvo's and an engine dating back to the 1978. I'm not one for wildly modifying my cars, but I'm thinking about lowering it, fitting a 7-seat conversion kit, removing a silencer or two to release more of the straight-six growl and fitting a Retro Rides sticker if they're still going? The videos at the bottom show how the D24 motor can sound with the right exhaust. These demonstrate how the D24 diesel can sound

I knew there was a reason I keep coming back to this forum. Cars like yours!
I've been looking into this a little bit. I like a loud exhaust on the right engine and there's no doubt that 6-cylinder diesels can sound great. There are occasions when quite loud isn't loud enough. But there are other times, particularly when I am leaving for work at 6am, when even a little bit loud is too loud.
I've been looking at the solenoid flapper valve things that can open a butterfly valve at the flick of a switch. If I could fit one of those before all of the silencers and cat, and have a straight pipe coming from it, I wonder if that could be the best of both worlds.
I think cost may be prohibitive though, as I can't weld. So I'll probably just have the silencers cut out.

Thanks. Before you do any cutting have a look at the shape of the back box section, you might be able to remove are replace with a bit of straight pipe. Then if you don't like the sound you can refit the old set up. i'm running one big silencer on the merc, I would be have 2 but I'm limited with the space available.

Something to note is you're may well have a cat too given its age. It doesn't need one legally so that can be removed by swapping in a 760 down pipe which didn't have the cat. I think removing the s pipe at the back makes a difference too though mines never had one since the diesel went in so I'm not sure.
I'm hoping to put a full 3" stainless system on mine sometime with a vnt one day but for now I'm just running a standard set up from a 760. Personally I do quite a lot of motorway miles so like the fact the standard silencers make sure it doesn't drone at motorway revs so that comes above having a nice exhaust note when on the power but they can make a really nice noise can't they!
Love be car, look after it, there aren't many left and even less good ones!

So I fitted a 2.5 inch, de-cat, straight pipe to side exit. It was far too loud so I recorded a couple of videos before I added a silencer today.

That laugh is what these cars are all about. Amazing. Good health to enjoy

Rust is lighter than Carbon Fibre which is why old Fords are so fast.

I have just ditched the rear silencer on my 740 TD and she seems plenty loud enough, allows for more of the straight six burble, good work. Think a custom SS job beckons for mine soon though.
