pistonpopper It's amazing how the whole lockdown thing has really driven the price of bikes up.You just can't stop buying them, can you? I'm about to take half a BMX to the tip - I bought it to use the disk brake forks and front wheel on a recumbent but have no use for the back half (and it seems to be alloy so no use for chopping up and welding onto things)! Are any of the components any use to you - I'll happily strip them and store them until sometime you are passing if so?

Thats pretty cool too duncanmartin I'm not sure of the legality of it on British roads though. Although, what I've got in mind won't exactly be road legal either.

Last time I was in there, Decathlon had brake and gear inner cables at £1 each. If I were you, I'd just buy a bunch and a couple of reels of outer and then cable up everything. Looks pretty cool though.

Thanks for that duncanmartin, my friend and I are now looking into the idea of an electric bike too! Heheheh, I've got a 24" BMX build to complete (or more accurately... to start) and then after that I am going to pick one of my own Klunkerz (or obtain another) and transform it into a 50mph Ebike. It's the future.

Funny you should talk about adding a motor duncanmartin, during the lockdown a friend of mine and myself have been half joking about adding a mini-moto engine to an old BMX I've got kicking about. Although we've only really been building it theoretically we've gone so far as to work out what bits we'd need, and how much it should all cost... £63ish! It would only be a 50cc, but it might be a chuckle! Have you seen this? www.atomiczombie.com/estyle-electric-bmx-diy-planBlimey, I don't fancy going to all that trouble to end up with a top heavy front wheel bike. As far as I've seen, ebikes need to be primarily rear wheel powered. There's a lot of people with ebikes or ebike conversions round here and the ones with a front drive hub can't go uphill at all. The front wheel just skitters about manically and the people riding them have to almost lie down on top of the handlebars to get traction.

I don't know why it's FWD, I suspect it's because it's an old design, and the front wheel hubmotors were the only thing available cheaply. Mid-drive is clearly the best solution, but they tend to be the most expensive.

From what I've gathered if you can do a combination of rear hub and a mid drive with a modulator unit to keep them both synched, you're looking at a 50mph wall climber.

About a year ago I had both front and rear wheels with motors on them. I sold them to a fella who was trying to build himself a two wheel drive electric bike. Apparently his doctor had told him to take up cycling for the benefit of his health, my feeling was that a two wheel drive electric bike probably wasn't what his doctor had in mind.

There's a lot of ebike activity down here on the seafront where it's completely flat, completely smooth. I really struggle to understand why anybody needs to do that on an ebike, rather than doing a bit of gentle pedalling. When I finally build an ebike it's going to be with one purpose in mind and that is to try and instigate a revival of the illegal drag racing that used to take place along Shoreham port's seaboard access road. Only this time it will be sub-60mph, on silent pedal bikes, so maybe the police wont notice.

If I were to build an ebike, it would be for going up hills only. I used to like mountain biking, but always hated the uphill slog, as depending on the tracks/layout, a long uphill climb to get back to your car when you're injured or knackered is never fun.

Although, I'm still leaning towards the old fossil fuel direction... Sometimes it's good to live in the past. If I were to build an ebike, it would be for going up hills only. This makes perfect sense to me!

That looks like a nice find. It might be the pictures, but it looks like the nose of the saddle is pointing up slightly - this will almost always cause saddle problems with a drop bar bike. Dead flat is the usual recommendation, but nose a tiny bit down can help relieve the pressure at the front sometimes (though it can also increase the pressure on your arms and give you neck ache after a while). In terms of reach to the ground, if the Unilever is running 26" wheels and this is on 700s, then that's probably the difference... Cheers Duncan

Thanks for the advice Duncan, going and looking at it, you're right, the nose of the saddle is pointing upwards slightly. That is how I usually have my saddles, not being a drop bar bike fan I never gave it any thought. I've adjusted it now though. One click on the seat clamp is the difference between nose up and nose down. I'll give it another go and see how I get on. With the Univega and the Clements side by side it's pretty obvious that the Univega has the bigger frame, but as you say Duncan its the wheel size that brings the crossbar up a couple of inches on the Clement bike. If it happens to stop widdling it down today I might take the Clement back out tonight to see if the new saddle position makes it a bit more comfortable. If not then maybe it's time the Univega had a trip out in the rain.

I love your Twenty story, and you are right, it looks lovely. Good luck finding the rightful owner. I had a folding Twenty until recently. I got it for £20 or so on eBay, but it was a right faff getting it into a small enough package to fit it into the boot of the car, and I can fold the seats down to take my other bikes. As a result I barely used it, even after I fixed the cotter pin in the cranks and fitted a half decent saddle. So a few weeks ago I donated it to the bikes for key workers scheme. Hopefully it is some use for someone. I have a giant puncture repairathon in my future as well. I bought a giant stack of inner tubes when PlanetX had them at 99p a pop, so when I got a puncture I just stuck a new one in. Now I have a whole bunch hanging on a hook in the garage waiting for me to get around to fixing them!
