You just made me wonder about your wheels in white. or with each 'step' painted a darker colour towards the holes. I probably should have left the first step alone though for a more substantial look.

Out of sheer boredom (back to work tomoro, never looked forward to it before ) I swapped wheels over again, and used 10mm spacers at the back. I also painted the tyre writing in white, again out of boredom, to see what it looked like. I like it, however it peels off rather easily so I'll just pressure wash it off at work. Ordered a new set of GSi rear lights, as I just can't get the Depo ones to seal, and hate having to use silicon. And @mercdan68 jinxed me, I've got an eml on every now and again, can I fin anything paperclippy to read the codes? Can I curse word. I think it's an air leak as my new idle seems to be about 2k.

I think the cars dislike being laid up more than we do! whats the engine code as there are a few different 1.4?

C14NZ - the worst engine to be dressed up like this came on in traffic, went out when I restarted, stopped at lights and it came back on again. Cant be anythin major, theres no cam/crank sensors on this engine, it's really basic.

After your advice my lad found our fault It’s either the gear selector switch Or the auto box needs an oil change Both will get done this week

The other thing on the 1.4NZ is the distributor as they used 2 manufacturers, some had lucas with the black cap held on with 2 screws and the other were Bosch with the redish/brown cap, the Lucas are very poor and seem to attract corrosion internally so its worth popping the cap off to take a peek on a regular basis!

Think you may be on to something there, i changed the cap, once with an emergency second hand one (read stole off my brothers) when I limped to my mums and just couldn't get it going again, that was probably 6 years ago, and never thought about it till now. Have to see if I can find one. Mines the orangey one.

Changed the rear lights over for standard GSi ones, the Depo ones fitted awfully and had a load of silicon in just to get them to seal. Not detangoed these ones, and polished some rust streaks off the boot lid, seems the back window aperture is slowly rotting out under the seal

Well its poorly, wont idle properly at all, changed the idle control valve and coolant temp sensor to no avail, cant find any air leaks, idle is jumping from 2k to 3k and very slow to come down again from any sort of rev, throttle linkage and cable are all free moving, at a loss now and no garages open to take it to

Can’t really help as I don’t know...
But can you check the connectors to things in the engine bay and clean them Stray some wd40 round the inlet and pipe work, because on other stuff that sounds a bit like an air leak And someone somewhere on tinternet suggested it could be crank position sensor (or specifically the screening) so maybe check physical conditions of sensor cables
Sorry, best I can do.... good luck

The only other sensors that come to mind are the throttle position sensor mounted on the throttle body or you also have a MAP sensor which is on the scuttle panel connected to the throttle body with a vacuum pipe, I don't think ECUs on these give much trouble, it does sound a bit like an air leak though as John said
Can you not do the blink code check to see if its throwing any codes up?

At the moment there is no eml, however... I lost my temper a little bit and shook, wiggled and pulled loads of things... it's now running sweet I think it may have been the position sensor though as I wiggled that hard enough to unplug it, WD40d the connection and put it back. See how it goes now. gtviva I don't suppose you have a dizzy cap and rotor arm for one of these engines do you?

Might be a result then! If you need a throttle position switch I do have some, with the distributor cap pull a plug lead off and post a picture of the cap showing the connection as there are 2 styles of Bosch cap and I will see what ive got

This is mine bud Trying to get hold of a set of plugs as well, Euro can get them but god knows when I'll get them, 2 weeks and counting for my brothers order. Key workers allowed in store, but only if your NHS, being a delivery driver isn't good enough apparently.
