Have you ever considered an engine swap? Back in the day I bought a complete running Cavalier 2 litre 8 valve and swapped the lot (and had it running) in an afternoon. I'd already uprated the front breaks to Astra 16v a week prior. Considered it and even have a full x16xe conversion sat in my mum's garage, however finding time to get the car and the engine in the same place with the right tools is somewhat challenging. I doubt it will happen this year, but it's mostly there ready to go. Already has the 16v brakes as well.

Nice! I've read some really positive things about the 1.6 16v. I'm sure that I read that the inlet is very restrictive and bike carbs is the easiest way of serious gains. Once upon a time, I had novas, mk2 and 3 astras, and did a lot of the mods of the time. Keep up the updates, love a mk3!

There is something daft like 5 foot of inlet to detune it as standard, it's not hard to get c20xe power from them apparently. I had a mk3 estate with one in, and for what it was it was really nippy and sounded well with a good induction kit

Gave the bumper I bought a quick blow over, not perfect but better than I had, has a decent shine to it and I can cut it back as well. Spent today getting it on, could do with someone to hold it while I tighten the bolts to stop it sagging but it's on Went to a small meet last night, started out well, then there was some typical chav behaviour, but they went home early and the Astra went down quite well, even when correcting people it isn't a gsi, was happy with that only got 1 pic as my phone died

Went to HK in Ruabon on Sunday, as I wanted a few trim pieces and boot struts, 1 mk3 there, 1.4 3dr Merit in maroon, on a K plate, straight as they come with 85k but theyd trashed it with the forks, which is good really as I'd probably have brought it home with me. Anyway got me struts but the boot trim was broke the same way mine was. Luckily AndyB-Redtop messaged and yesterday went to see him and his Astra (very tidy) to pick up the trim. On the way back there was a horrendous squeal, and then it disappeared. Fast forward to today I take the kids to school in the Astra (there's more fuel in it than the Mondeo) and it rears its head again. The whole inside of the alternator was moving in and out about a half inch causing the fan to cut into the body of the alternator. CES wanted 145 plus vat so trailed up to HK again to relieve the poor merit of its alternator. All good now. So gave it a decent polish as it's starting to look really ropey lately, certainly better in pictures than in the flesh.

So Tuesday night this happened. There has been a spot here since I bought it 10 years ago but it's gotten rather manky in the last 12 months. So left Kurust in it overnight so I could fill it with budge the following day. I'm well aware I haven't got all the rust, it's so I can use it for my wedding without having a huge hole in the side of it. I've got a man with a plan to do it with metal over the summer. Went Halfords for some fiberglass, mesh and body filler, and had a can of 474 Glacier White mixed up to be on the safe side. I've used appliance white from halfords on the bumper and you wouldn't know the difference, but playing it safe since id have to blend it in. Anyway, stage 2, fill the hole Nice day so filler was going off nice and quick, couple of skins of p38 brought us to painting. Left it a few days in the sun, hardened nicely. Not a perfect job by any means but unless you looked you wouldn't know. I know, and it's already bugging me, but better than the snot that was there. Once the wedding is out of the way outer and inner will be done properly, panel is waiting but the fella is rather busy atm, so this will do short term. Only filler I've ever used on this though, and its 25 this year so not bad going.

It’s done and tidy for your wedding that’s the main thing A proper repair later along the line will be worth doing To keep this tidy motor in tip top condition

Looks good man, hadn't read much since your first few pages! definitely good idea to get the arch stop gap repaired to see you through in the meantime. Even knowing yours is GSi ish, My first memory of an mk3 GSi was on the first week of August 1993, I was almost 10, L-reg's were just out and I was at Llandudno on holiday. A guy in a brand new L-reg dark blue GSi was hammering it up and down the Orme road every night. Sounded amazing.
