As long as you have something stopping it flexing in both directions you should be ok. I added bars at 90degs and no problems since..
Also I can thoroughly recommend the windscreen for any long-ish distance - made a huge difference. Bit more detail on the Mig forum, it's cheap and quick to do.

Windscreen and some plexi doors make a huge difference to the comfort levels. And fuel economy, and top speed. It's almost like normal cars have them for a reason

I like the spare wheel storage It had a screen when we got it, we may go back and fit one but it was so nice to remove all the bird poo welded windscreen frame, that wasn’t even cut to length, we were happy to run without! Maybe by next Sunday though, we’ll have changed our minds (having been and checked the weather forecast )

Been out and done some bits, wired the lights and horn onto the connector, so you can unclip the bonnet, undo the wiring and lift it out of the way (at last, should have done that ages ago) fitted the lights etc to the bonnet And fixed the other end to the bulkhead Painted some brackets, sorted a few other bits and then refitted the bonnet Which looks ok, until you look from the side! Neither bonnet fits properly and they both have a gap at the dashboard. So not sure if they were all like that, but it looks a bit rubbish... we had a plastic strip in there, but we’ve changed it today and used the front of a fluorescent batten holder. But the bonnet isn’t square It’s always been a bit on the skew, but now it looks really obvious, so suspect we’ve got the aerocatch bolts skewed So will try and have a look at that later on, but it might not be right at the Weekender if anyone looks.... so sorry Anyway, we need to go for a run tomorrow and check it’s driving ok, but now it’s raining (The bits of conduit were tensioning the grills until the tigerseal went off)

Do you have a fuel shut off valve fitted in the fuel line ? I ask because G15's have the tank higher than the carbs and they can suffer from carb needle valve weep although if I recall it usually just leaks from the carb rather than filling the engine. If you don't then it would be worth looking at to protect the new engine when its installed.

At the minute no, when we get back from the Weekender we are swapping the other engine in (a friend is making/modifying an exhaust for us, so wants the Fug with engine in to sort that) Whilst doing that we will go to an electric pump, and going to resits the fuel filter etc and fit the mk1 golf fuel pump relay mentioned above. I guess a fuel tap would be good too (we did have one fitted but it weeper) as it’s parked up for fairly long periods

We been out for a zoom round, did about 35 miles without anything falling off (or noticing if it did ) Got waved at, and a few people slowed down to have a better look... so think the aesthetic changes work Even if it’s still a 10yard car Not going to post any photos of the car until next weekend though, but pretty sure if you see us on our way to Goodwood you’ll know it’s us! Photos to follow next weekend, and if you are going, see you at Goodwood!

It’ll look better without, they’ll only need to work for a mile or two though if you get stopped... fit them, carry on then stop down the road and take them off etc

John How do Tom and yourself set the beam pattern on the headlight? I parked the van near to a wall and put a couple of crosses with insulating tape, then we did the same with the Fug. They won’t be perfect but they move about a bit anyway, so more worried about annoying others than anything else.

We eavesdropped Quatermass thread and ordered some Mothers polish, and cleaned the wheels And the fuel tank So short of packing, we are about ready to go Then we stripped, cleaned and checked the 44idf carbs after they leaked fuel previously... Hmmmm.... what’s that in the bottom of the float chamber? Erm, lumps of stone we think!! They were filthy too (did you say we should have done this in the first place? You may be right!) Stripped them, gave them a good clean. Could probably do with giving them an ultrasonic clean, but we haven’t got one so for now they are better ***wanders off muttering and looking at the salad bowl in the kitchen*** Set the floats The stripped that one again after finding we’d used a 40idf gasket Had to trim the other gaskets, as they seem to be 40idf ones, but without alternative ones supplied (or maybe because the inlets have been match ported) Bolted back onto the engine for now... to be resumed after Weekender

Well, the Weekender!! What a great weekend (thanks to all the organisers and crew for doing a brilliant job, yet again) In advance of the Weekender we sorted the bonnet and mudguards. We also put sharks teeth vinyls on, but didn’t post as we wanted to turn up with them. We bought some cheap vinyls, and went to fit them only to find that they were too deep for the buggy, so we had to cut them in half and then trim out a section from the centre and overlap them as we fitted them. But think it looks ok On the way down to Goodwood, they seemed to completely change our subtle and inconspicuous car!! Was quite funny waving at people filming us as they overtook on the A34 We set off about 4pm on Friday, and then got stuck in traffic for half an hour in the first 3 miles but from then on things went well until we got 80miles in..... when it started to rain, and obviously we got some damp in the electrics, so with 15 miles to go the horn decided it was going to sound all the time, we stopped and disconnected it and carried on a bit further when the damp got into flasher relays, and they began to do strange things.. the remainder of the journey was like a moving game of bop-it.. as I tried to switch off left, right or hazards as they started to flash randomly We made it to site, unpacked and set up the tent Had a chat with Blackpop then Mercdan and George and then went and scored a mcDonalds from the drive through... the staff leaned out of the window to serve us but didn’t think it was anywhere near as funny as we did Saturday we parked near Quatermass on the gravel, and wandered around meeting others from the forum, L7 and his mates. A definite high point was lending Mark some gaffer tape to fix the pop (ok, not quite to fix... more to attach a sticker, but it was nice to almost bring someone with engineering skills down to my level ) Then in the evening were fed and hydrated by Mark, the elusive JohnnyBravo and Samta22! Sunday was more of the same with more shenanigans We packed the Fug And using the soft nitrous, raced home trying to beat the weather We had to stop for some fuel We saw Chasr in the Mercedes at the top of the A34 and made it to about 6 miles from home before it chucked it down. Tom was already rain suited up, but I got soaked (wasn’t going to stop though when we were that close) A great weekend, but we are certainly tired now!! 260 miles, and didn’t break down!

It was an honour to finally meet the legend that is Tom Sparky in person. And the bloke he drags around with him to presumably provide him with food and stuff when required You're too harsh on yourselves and the Fug, it's a great thing, looks brilliant and any maniacs willing to drive it as far as you do have the right to have a slightly wonky bonnet line if they damned well want to. Considering how far you've brought it (so far), you deserve a round of applause

Yes, it was great to meet in person.. have to get together at the Gathering! The van looks spot on too! It was an honour to finally meet the legend that is Tom Sparky in person. Considering how far you've brought it (so far), you deserve a round of applause Technically, he’s more of a carer to make sure I don’t hurt myself (he was very good last night as we went to bed rather than staying up drinking Thank you it did seem to be liked and we got some nice comments (in fact the only nasty comments were from @quatermass I think he’s just jealous because we don’t have head gaskets though ) We will have to learn to embrace its faults and not treat it like a ginger step-child Looking forward to meeting at the Gathering, you’ll be in Dolly with the new engine by then

in fact the only nasty comments were from @quatermass I think he’s just jealous because we don’t have head gaskets though He feels he has to set high standards of social awkwardness as the Imperator of BNMAC Which is fortunate as it comes so naturally to him

Got home early so I could pop and get MOT And we got a pass!! Still couldn’t get readings on the rollers, had to take it up the road Clutch started to drag a bit on the way back, but reason for getting the MOT is so we can drop the engine out and sort the engine cradle for the big engine so we can check that whilst it’s in bits Need to cut the cradle out at the top, as we welded it in and didn’t get round to cutting it and fitting a bolted section... started driving it and didn’t get round to it
