Got a magnet query, I am looking to make an electromagnetic clamp. So it would be 2 pieces of steel sandwiching a thinner (1mm) bit of sheet metal.
My idea is to use a holding electromagnet rated to around 280kg (I'm thinking an electromagnetic door lock), attach this to a bit of steel approx 75cm by 2cm on the underside, place my bit of thin sheet on top and then clamp it above with another bit of steel which would be the size of the piece I am clamping.
What I can't figure out for sure, is if i put the electromagnet on the underside piece, will it magnetize the whole underside and if so will it keep or diminish it's strength? Also would I get hot-spots, so to speak, where the electromagnet is placed?
