Hi
I'm looking to build a mezzanine floor in my unit and am after some pictures/ideas if anyone else has done the same, its mainly to be used for storage but if I can make one big enough my dad may use it for working on his wooden furniture
Ive got space for up to 7 metres x 3 metres mezzanine in total
my unit is only breeze blocks 4-5 foot high then the walls are normal cladding so it couldn't be build straight off the walls, I'm contemplating a few options at the moment
a. buy a complete metal mezzanine floor but this is very expensive for a hobby unit and I could be looking at £800 + fitting to do this.
b. buy metal mezzanine floor legs off ebay or somewhere then use floor joists to build it up into a complete mezzanine floor but this is a bit of an expensive way of doing it as well but also would seem solid?
c. I have a lot of pallet racking that is about 3 metres wide x 1 metre deep, I'm thinking if I put them all together then get a friend to tie them all in together and weld together would these be strong enough to hold some good weight? I'm guessing pallet racking must be made to hold a fair bit?
does anyone have any pictures of their own mezzanines?

I looked into the same thing, pallet racking is about 2000kg per level dependant on whose spec sheets you read. If you extend the beams then you'd reduce the load bearing capacity quite a bit. The verticals are surprisingly strong when upright and fitted properly, not however resistant to side impacts. I've seen beams that are 2760mm longbut not seen any longer. If your going to weld then may be wise to triangulate the ends with a second set of brackets about a foot below the beam?

thanks I thought they would take a fair bit of weight, they are around 2.5-3 metres long I'm not sure on the exact length, I was thinking about triangulating them earlier to give some extra strength to it all, pretty sure it wont have more than 2000kg per beam/upright section on it, probably nowhere near that in fact.

I was just going to use mine for fibreglass kit car bodies and panels so didn't factor in a large amount of weight. If you have the room then turning one sideways and would give you a fairly robust bench at floor level but would require more beam cutting and welding. It would also reduce the gap between uprights and might negate the need for triangulation. I was also planning to rig a 1/2 ton lift under mine to help me get the bodies on and off the chassis.

what ever you do, do not fasten it to the walls, if you do your will double your building rates, they have to be free standing

I only pay a monthly rental as its at a farm (old converted pig pens) lots of people down here have mezzanines but noones ever about down here when I am to look at theirs so I don't think building rates will be a problem..

I know thats not relevant in this case, but when we installed a mezzy floor at work,( proper install, stairs fire escapes the lot) the rent went up as we had added more 'floor area' . Just something those with rented workspaces might need to take into account. ( and for a commercial premises,it needs to meet building and fire regs)

its not a business only a hobby unit so I'm ok on that front and hes not charged others extra for putting in a mezzanine, as I have 3 or 4 sets of pallet racking I'm thinking of using this widthways across the unit then using wooden joists going down the length of racking (opposite direction to the racking) then board it, been googling a lot and seems quite a common and cheapish way of building one, I already have the racking so would only have to pay for the cost of the joists and the flooring,
looking online I think 400mm is the norm for distance between joists for the sort of size mezzanine I'm looking at, still a bit confused at what thickness joists I would need, guess it depends on how much your putting on it, seems 2 inch x 6 inch looks common.
