Up for unfortunate sale I have my throttle bodied 1986 190E 2.3-16V Mercedes Cosworth. This is a lovely example of a fantastic car and has a lot of history. Personally having gone from a 220Bhp supercharged Mx5 to this it feels well setup and also feels like a car half its size.
The car is HPI clear - never been stolen/written off etc and has had 8 previous owners.
The clocks are showing around 150k miles and the service book is stamped up to 126k Miles (this was in 2002). When I bought the car in December last year it had 147k and I serviced it right away as it had been sat under a cover for about 4 years. I changed the oil and filter, fitted new brake discs, pads, couple of bushes, braided HEL brake lines, 4 new tyres, numerous bulbs, wiper blade and a front wheel bearing. The only things now left on the MOT as advisories are Track rod ends, lower rear hub bushes and a small hole inside the inner wing (I should add that the final image is of the MOT advisories and the brakes have all been changed since then and the corrosion has been wire brushed off then sealed)– everything else has been sorted and for the right price the others can be sorted too. I serviced it again in October doing oil and filter including camcover gasket and iridium spark plugs.
The standard mechanical fuel injection and air box system was removed and replaced with a 48mm twin throttle body setup – the distributor was removed along with some other unnecessary items. I sourced a Hartmann Motorsport Manifold from Holland, Twin throttle bodies from Jenvey Dynamics along with fuel rail and underslung throttle linkage, 440cc pico Bosch EV14 injectors, Denso coil on plug coils and a MegaSquirt ECU – I also removed the viscous fan and replaced with an electric one. The exhaust is currently straight through from cat back to a cherrybomb and it balances the noise from the front to rear perfectly. Mapping was conservative since my mapper did not know the history of the engine and made 148.1Bhp at the wheels on the first mapping session. This was mapped using "ITB Mode" on the Megasquirt - we then discovered that by mapping using TPS only (Throttle Position Sensor) we were able to get a much smoother idle and also made a lot more power in the process taking it up to 161.6Bhp (Again at the wheels). If you look closely at the image of the dyno runs you can see my mapper has a sense of humour (Nick Bailey @ Skuzzle Motorsport). With a set of more aggressive cams (or standard cams reground) and a better exhaust system you should see about 200Bhp. More pictures can be supplied upon request of the installation but would rather talk through it in person or over the phone.
All parts that I have removed will be included in the sale and anything else I have lying around that is of use will go as well including a set of standard springs to take it back to stock ride height (if you wish). I also have a set of Mercedes “8 hole” wheels (16” 8J) that can go with for the right price.
The interior is in reasonable condition for its age showing no major rips or tears, just slight fading and wear – the rear passenger door card is pulling at the top and could do with replacing but I haven’t been affected by it. The coolant temp gauge doesn’t work due to some oaf removing the sensor wire to the gauge so just needs a new one relaying to the clocks (Guilty as charged). The gearbox is a proper 5 speed manual dogleg box and selects gears well – once you’re used to it, it’s better than a normal gearbox and actually makes sense having 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th in a straight line!
Exterior is also a bit faded, it has had a paint job in the past in its original colour of smoke silver but it’s crazed in places, stonechipped and there is slight lacquer peel too – there aren’t many dings or dents either but it polishes up nicely as I did a full exterior detail removing the worst scratches a while back!
I spent the weekend working on it, fitted a new thermostat as the one i removed i'm 99% sure was the original thermostat - also a new Rad cap which was 100% the original and the rubber was ruined (Slung in the box in the boot for comedy value). I'm pretty sure that if and when this car leaves me i'll cry. I fell out of love with it due to sheer ignorance in wanting an S13 and since having worked on it recently and just even having it idling in front of me i realised just how fantastic it is and i really hope that it goes to a new home with owners that will love it as much as i have.
