Nice one. I probably should have gone down the off the shelf manifold route with the fiesta instead of modding the zetec one as I ended up modding the new exhaust to make it work which in turn makes replacement more difficult. Good choice with the Ashley system. My pointless fact for the night is Ashley are based in my local town and my gcse art teacher was Mrs Ashley who was actually his wife although I think it is run by the son's now as this was 20+ years ago and she must have been 50+ then. She had all the Ashley stickers on the window by her desk and even gave me couple when I showed an interest/knew what the company did.

Not much of an update I'm afraid, I spent most of the day actually clearing the garage so I could actually get in there to now be able to work on the car. I have had a better look at the battery tray and the bit of rot by the rear wheel arch which doesn't look to bad (hopefully). I'm going to pick apart what's left of the battery tray to try not to make to much mess for myself when it comes to putting the new panel in. I am also going to remove the rear interior to make sure there aren't anymore surprises lurking for me. Here's a couple more pics of what's left of the battery tray. Cheers Rob.

Why would you even bother doing that?? Still will have it done properly this time. Will try and get out there during the week and see what I can unpick from that mess!

I don't like those battery tray repair panels. Most ones you see repaired are just welded over the top in an mot standard fashion. I would cut the bad out and then trim the new section to suit. A guy on the rsoc forum made his tray so it bolted in so he could get good paint coverage and also ment it was removable for cleaning purposes.

I guess whoever had the car at the time just got it done to pass the mot Phil? Still shocking that someone paid for that!! You Used to be able to buy the panel and the tray separately but I couldn't find one like that. If I could I probably would've just bought the panel and put the battery in the boot! Going to have a good crack at it this weekend, can't do a great deal of grinding at night as my daughter's bedroom is above the garage. Cheers Rob.

I hate the slap dash m.o.t type repairs they only cause future problems
I remember those seperate panels from the hadrian's catalogue (I used to work in a panel shop) it was a sad day when imperial bought them out because from the start they never intended on producing the older stuff any more so when the stock was gone that was it
Why not just unpick the welds on the tray and pop the battery in the boot?

It will be a slow depressing job but once you have got the repair all removed you will be just left with the original problem that faced the mot man all those years ago. I would leave the battery where it is. Its not going to be in the way of a zetec in a Mk4 escort so I see no benefits of it being relocated to the boot.

To be fair it's actually a pretty good job compared to most I remember, most were held in with a few tacks of weld and thick layer of seam sealant. The later would of course make your life easier now!
As suggested it might be better to modify the battery tray so it bolts in the rust usually starts between the tray and bulkhead where the paint can't penetrate.

I guess I could just coat the panel in some sort of wax or something underneath the tray so that it might protect it? Just a quick update to keep my mojo going really! Last night I was ready to Chuck the towel in and put it all on ebay just didn't seem to be getting anywhere with anything to be honest. I spoke to my mate about it and within half an hour I had a guy texting me saying he would be round in the morning to give me a price for the welding! He works for my mate Joe and helps his dad with bodywork at the weekend. 11:30 this morning there was a knock at the door and there he was! Result, he's given me a price and is coming round next Saturday morning to make a start! Proper boost for me I should be able to start making some decent progress from next week! Cheers Rob.

Hi mate yes the tray is in and the other welding on the front end is done. Not the prettiest job in the world but it's solid and I will tidy it up. Going to book a day off work when the kids go back to school to crack on with it all. Got a mate coming round in the week to do the cambelt on the zetec so that will be ready to go in as well. All systems go at the moment just got to keep going with it!! Cheers Rob.

A little update for the escort. Decided to tidy up the engine bay before the engine goes in. Thought satin black would be a bit different but also easy to touch up if it got scratched putting the engine in as I only did it with a rattle can. Didn't come out to bad to be fair and once everything is back in the bay most of it will be covered anyway! Also painted the rocker cover for the zetec, got the engine mount sorted and the nodiz has arrived. Can't see any reason why the engine shouldn't be in very soon just waiting for some bolts to arrive for the water pump pulley as I cannot find them anywhere?! Oh and some new stainless bolts for the rocker cover! Will update as I go but I'm determined to get it in at least within the next couple of weekends. Cheers Rob. I have painted the bottom bit too just forgot to take a picture of that, will.get one later when I'm home.

Had a really good day in the garage today. My new stainless bolts for the rocker cover arrived yesterday so got them fitted. Before that I put the new set of spark plugs in and fitted new leads to the coilpack and mounted that back on. Also dug out the timing belt cover gave that a clean and put that on so it looks almost complete now. Grabbed a few more bits out of the spares department this afternoon. Got the cvh alternator,bracket and adjuster out. Gave the bracket and adjuster a lick of paint and swapped the zetec pulley onto the alternator. So all in all a good day hopefully get the alternator fitted this week in the evenings. Need to swap the 4 speed linkage over for the 5 speed one and we should be good to drop in the zetec!
