I get this quite often working on the drive and i don't mind at all mostly. Happy to chat with people who are interested although you do get some funny comments including a bloke who would not be told that the Eunos was not a Lotus ! Often get asked for help fixing stuff or if i have a certain tool.
The one time i did get annoyed was a cocky cold calling insulation salesman who could see my legs sticking out from under an Impreza as i was trying to manhandle a stainless exhaust into place single handed.I stuck my head out and said with mild sarcasm i was rather busy to be greeted with a look that said he had more right to be on my property uninvited than i had. That annoyed me no end and i told him so.

Ah our neighbours must have been on training course in how to cope with a public nuisance living in their street. They always show interest, leave me alone when I'm clearly fighting a losing battle with a stubborn suspension unit, never complain when the angle grinder has been going all day or I fill the road with cellulose fumes.
Or maybe I died and have gone to heaven?

I've only one neighbour who's a bit of a pain,he's a bit of a Ned Flanders character and on the surface he's pretty harmless but he always swings the conversation round to the guy who lives next door to him. They have not got on since he moved in,I get on with him ok but then I don't live next door to him.It annoys me that he is fishing for me to 'take sides' in his little war with the guy opposite and i have to remind him that its none of my business,he's done me no harm.On the whole though its quite nice when the cars on the drive and people I don't know take the time to make a polite comment,"don't see many of those about any more","you've kept that well",and the old faithful "how about doing mine next" especially if I'm giving it a wash etc.

A few years back I lived in the suburbs, had loads of people stop for a quick chat when out cleaning the cars. 'I used to have on of those' 'You will make it rain' 'I'll give you a £100 for it'
Never bothered me.
One day I had my two Capri's out the front for polishing, A nice white 2.8 and a blue concourse winning car with the bonnet up, was absolutely gleaming. A guy walks by, has a look and we have a bit of a chat. He tells me while pointing at 2.8 he knows where there is one exactly the same for £200. Ha, ok. Turns out the place is about 30 miles away and by chance I had been there the day before and it wasn't there. Ok cheers, 'i might go and have a look'.
Well I did go, yea I had missed it, parked up the back as a trade in. exactly the same apart from being a different colour, model and engine! Got the car for a ridiculous price, sold the parcel shelf for the same amount so a free 2.0 S Automatic!

The neighbours keep themselves to themselves around here. They know I like older cars but don't seem too bothered. One of them owns a pug 205 GTI though, so at least someone like minded near by. Guy around the corner though seems to be more of a grease monkey, as he is always doing something with his Mercedes 207D van, or retro motorbike. Its the people away from the house that annoy, as I always get the "why did you want that (insert expletive) car" or "I had one of those, it was (another expletive)"

About 10yrs ago I was adjusting the mechanical brakes on a Standard Flying 12 on my drive, my elderly next door neighbour piped up with, "tighten them up, back off the fronts 4 clicks, the backs 6." This was spot on advice. My neighbour drove trucks, ambulances, and crew bus's in the war for a Canadian bomber Sqn based nr. York, part of the initial training was to strip down Standard Tilly utility trucks, then 15cwt Fords as SHE progressed. An awesome and indestructible old gal, sadly she is now blind, but what tales she would tell me when I was under various old motors. Another old fella saw me on the drive and then gave a gallon of clear, and a gallon of black Dinitrol wax, yes I get the odd muppet, but the nice people far outweigh them, and for that I am grateful.

Old boy on one side would always stop and chat, sadly he's no longer with us. Young couple on other side are petrol heads (Minis and a Frogeye) and no problem at all.

I do feel your pain although its nice to have a chat about our old/ interesting cars sometimes you just need or want to get on with the job and get indoors/ out driving so the random 'My uncle had car that colour' passer by doesn't help. I used to get this a lot but now my parking spaces are at the back of the house away from passing eyes so if I'm at the house the only distractions are my few neighbours. what really annoys me is when in my workshop (private unit but in a trade garage area) a customer from another garage will wonder in, won't ask but just walk straight in, and start asking questions about the old ford pop that's actually an Austin or ask what's hidden under the tarps etc these folk usually have no knowledge or real interest in cars.

I've a few motors around me and sometimes have to move something to get to whatever I want to drive. I've had 2 neighbours notice this and come over and say " If you ever need to park a car there's a spare place on my drive " The next door neighbour has commented once I how I nearly gassed him while tuning my car outside . I said " You should have told em and I'd have moved it down a bit" . He replied, " Looked like you were struggling so didn't like to ask " !!

I get it a lot and rather like it. I much prefer the people in our 'scene' than the cars themselves. The only time I'm ever riled by it is when a well intentioned neighbour peers over the fence and announces that Edd China could have that done in half the time...

I don't get a lot of passing traffic as I live at the end of a cul-de-sac but if people make conversation I really don't mind. We hadn't lived here long when I bought a Mini with a really loud exhaust. The old guy from two doors down, who is usually a right miserable sod, came to see me one day. I was expecting a bit of grief about noise but he took my hand and put a pair of 1960s Mini cufflinks in it. I always think that if I offer a bit of advice, break out the jump leads, or just indulge their conversations, they'll not make a fuss if on occasion I make a bit of racket with the angle grinder. I adopted the same philosophy when we moved into the culdesac about 4 years back. Offered jump leads on 3 or 4 occasions... A push up the street another. But alas, it seems to have failed. The owners here are well entrenched, and have zero diy to do, gardens that get weeded twice yearly, and 3 year old dullboxes. As such I'm just that guy who's always tinkering with cars or MTB or digging up half his garden. Get a casual hello if lucky, or usually a blank stare. The distain received for being brought home on AA truck once, and tow pole thrice in 4 years, is palpable. Parents house was the opposite. I'd been there 20+ years, and all the locals knew I was into nitro rc gear, bikes, cars, and owned an Alsatian which I walked twice daily..... Couldn't top up screen wash without getting talked to, questions asked. All good natured

i work on my cars round the back so don't get randoms stopping by but i do have a few neighbours who seem to pop up when I'm in a hurry or having a nightmare two hours into a five minute job which does get annoying but i keep my head and stay polite as nobody moans even when the compressor and air gun are going for ages and the radio is blearing out whilst a bonfire slowly chokes the neighbourhood. the main plus for where i work is the guy two doors up is a beetle freak who sprays cars for a living, the next house is a mod who lets his mate park his model a hotrod in his garage at the moment then a short stroll further up is two icecream men one of which has a big double garage and plenty of tools if i need a hand then a bit further up an older guy with a couple of harleys then a bit further a guy with a h plate bmw 750 then another harley fan, go the other way and a family with a old mini and a s2000, another with a t4 transporter and normally another oldish car on the go. all of this in a rear access ally shared by about 50 houses.

The neighbours by us are pretty sound, we live in a cul de sac where people at this end seem to all get on, the people at the other end tend to keep themselves of themselves. Get the odd comment of 'how's the car' but always friendly. Even got asked to top up next doors screen wash because I 'know about cars' lol

I'm in a cul-de-sac so don't get many passing - neighbours are ok and don't bother me much - one guy has a BX16 and there's a retired ship engineer who likes a blether. The only time I got a grumble or 2 was when my Camel Trophy Discovery appeared on the transporter from Holland - the driver reckoned he'd arrive around 7am but in fact turned up at 5am - on a Monday!

Suzuki Alto by srblythe, on Flickr I try to keep the driveway tinkering to a minimum and keep to basic tasks such as changing wheels, topping up fluids etc. I have a single long driveway that can fit around 6 cars, sometimes I need to briefly move them all onto the street to get the one at the front out. I imagine that this probably annoys the neighbours but nobody has said anything. I try to keep the cars at home complete and road legal so that nobody can accuse me of running a scrapyard. I have had a few positive comments from passers by about the cars. I'm lucky enough to share a unit where I can work on cars in peace, there aren't a lot of general public passing by so I rarely get anyone stopping to say anything which can be lonely at times. I get on well with the neighbours who normally comment on what ever I'm working on with 'another car? (I'm up to 8) or will that ever move, or working on that old thing again. Very rarely will some actually know what car it is or be interested. The exception is my immediate neighbour one side we share tools, time, knowledge space etc with each other frequently and he has a very rare expensive Z1 BMW tucked in the garage unused for years. Might persuade him to get it going this summer......
