Presented for sale is this 1990 BMW 318is. This car is finished in Sterling Silver but is a far cry from original.
Please bear in mind while looking/reading that there are a few tiny jobs to finish off.
The exterior is rough and ready. The paint is rubbed off in areas and scratched, but mostly ok. The bonnet is black and there are several dents around the body. All trims are intact and all panels close snugly with correct panel gaps - it is a very straight shell. There is a significant amount of time invested in the body to make it completely sound and rust-free. It was a solid base but there were still a few areas which have all been addressed and it is totally solid now, and has been painted and sealed where needed.
The car features smoked headlights and a blacked out front grille, a lightweight front bumper, and smoked front repeaters.
The interior is largely stripped out, featuring only front door cards and a pair of reclining (so access to rear unhindered) bucket seats. The carpets are removed as are the rear seats. The rear belts and parcel shelf are still in the car, and can be removed if desired, but left for new owner in case they want to fit a set of seats. Being a genuine 318is Sport model, it has a black headlining which is in great condition and uncut, and it is also a sunroof model car which also still works. The steering wheel is a small Sparco affair with appropriate boss.
The suspension is original, decent condition Sport issue, with vented front discs and solid rears - the same as a 170bhp 325i Sport, so adequate for this specification. The wheels are lightweight BBS-lookalike wheels in 16" with good tyres with plenty of traction.
The diff is a 1:4.1 open, fed by a five speed box, attached to the eponymous 1.8 twin cam engine for which the 318is is named and renowned. The M42B18 engine normally puts out in the region of 140bhp factory spec, but this one is reputed to be delivering 175bhp. That is owing to a custom fabricated plenum chamber feeding larger air intakes, upgraded Bosch injectors and a chipped ECU with raised rev limiter - certainly, this is a very lively car and has no problem laying "11s" and revs very freely.
It utilises the standard stainless 4-1 exhaust manifold and standard exhaust which keeps it quiet, but allows further scope for performance gains. it is reliable, starting at first turn, and does not overheat even when idling at standstill.
All in all this is a great little car for some track use - it's not really suited for the road with the bare interior and has no MOT and has not been taken for one. This will suit someone that needs a nimble, proven track orientated car that they can fettle and tinker with themselves as so desired.
Price is firm, phone during civilised hours only please (ie not late at night and not Sundays) and viewing welcomed during working hours. No on-road test drives permissable.
