For sale is my 1965 mk1 Hillman Imp.
I have owned Imps for 10+ years and this is my 3rd Imp that I have owned for around 4 years and have taken great care to restore, improve and modernise it over this time.
It is a late mk 1 Imp ‘Basic’ in ‘Balmoral Grey’.
The car won 2nd in class for Best Rootes Imp at last year’s 2015 Hillman Imp Club National.

I have however now moved house and no longer have any storage space for the Imp so it has not been used as much recently and has been in storage for the last few months only run on weekends. I believe that classic cars are to be driven and enjoyed and that having a classic sat for long periods does not do them any good – so it’s time to move it onto somebody who will use and enjoy it as I have done.
The previous owner restored the car in around 2000 with new arches and a full respray (I have pictures documenting this). When I obtained the car however the mechanicals and interior were requiring attention.
Over the last 4 years I have fully restored the car’s interior and the majority of the cars mechanicals.
I have fitted a newly built 930cc full Sport spec engine, fully refurbished the cars brakes and fitted fully adjustable AVO shock absorbers on all corners with Monte-Carlo lowering springs and JBW Superlites with new Yokohama tyres.
As well as this I have fettled and fitted numerous parts to improve the car.
Over the last few years the car has performed very well and been fully reliable. From Cheshire it has taken me up to and around Scotland, around Southern Wales and several long weekend breaks, all without hassle.
See full specification below.
Engine:
• 3 years ago the car was fitted with a newly built 930cc engine built by Mr Jones of Shrigley Engineering costing over £1000+.
• Full Sport specification
• New stainless steel Sports exhaust
• Refurbished oil cooler
• Rebuilt Stromberg carburettors.
• High Efficiency Radiator fitted
• Alternator conversion
• Recently fitted refurbished water pump
• Electronic ignition
• Starts on the button every time even when the car has sat for several days, starts with no trouble.
Suspension:
• Recently fitted brand new fully adjustable AVO shock absorbers on all 4 corners. Adjustable rears and adjustable mount fronts.
• New Monte-Carlo lowering springs fitted all 4 corners.
• 4x brand new JBW Superlite alloy wheels fitted with chromed nuts and locking nuts.
• 4x brand new Yokohama tyres.
• All of the above fitted in the last year with very little mileage since and cost in the region of £700+.
• Refurbished brakes on all corners with new brake cylinders, adjusters, springs, brake shoes and brake pipes fitted.
Interior:
• Interior was very tatty so completely restored.
• Rebuilt and repainted binnacle (needle still wobbles however as with many binnacle fitted Imps)
• New carpet fitted.
• I’ve fitted door pin switches and hidden LED light strips under the dashboard to illuminate when doors open at night. Car was ‘Basic’ specification so no interior lights when new.
• Fitted heater blower motor as again, car was ‘Basic’ spec so no blower as standard.
• Fitted binnacle temperature gauge as originally not fitted to ‘Basic’ spec cars.
• Fitted electric windscreen washer kit.
• Fitted period cigarette lighter.
• Recovered door cards in similar blue material.
• Fitted ‘Super’ specification door caps.
• Fitted later style Chrysler Imp seatbelts as car did not come with any when I purchased.
• Fitted period leather steering wheel.
• Lots of sound deadening fitted.
Other:
• Engine lid chrome rubbing strips fitted.
• TEX ‘Atlantic’ style adjustable bonnet mirrors fitted.
• Engine lid sound deadening fitted.
• Car comes with a new rear window stay that enables window to open when car is on the move. Courtesy of respected Imp Club member.
• Comes with paperwork back to its restoration in 2000 with MOTs back to then and pictures of restoration.
Car comes with many spares and parts. Original curly block engine comes with the car (although probably requires a rebuild). Original Hillman steering wheel. Original steel wheels. Basically everything to put the car back to standard.
As well as this it comes with lots of spares and parts:
• Several other sets of Monte-Carlo springs
• 1x set -1 inch lower Monte-Carlo springs
• 2x rear adjustable Spax shockers.
• Original shockers.
• Period factory fitment chrome Lucas Spot light and Fog light with brackets.
• Period rev counter
• New fuel pump.
• Various period steering wheels
• Engine parts, several heads, scrap?
• 2x working Solex carbs (one jetted for 930cc)
• 1x radiator
• Modern BMW rotoflex modification parts.
• Various other spares not listed.
Bad bits:
• Rear arches and bonnet lip will need attention in the next few years.
• Front driver side brake squeaking when cold (will try to sort in the next week)
• Rear Stromberg carburettor weeping. Car smells of petrol when warm (will try to sort in the next week)
Hopefully you will realise from my listing and pictures that this car has been a labour of love. I have put countless hours of work and more money than I should have into the car.
However, as a result here we have a car that runs like clockwork. Starts on the button and drive as a 930cc Sport Specification Imp should.
I have fitted various more modern updates and restored the interior to make the car a nice place to be with more modern comforts. The recent suspension upgrade make the car handle like it is on rails and is able to be driven with great confidence given the quality of the new suspension components.
The car will be sold with 12 months MOT and is obviously Tax free.
Car located in Cheshire.
Listed at £4,500
