I know this'll be another thread that sits about with not alot happening, but I thought I'd stick it up anyway. A bit of a back story as to how this came about..... Around ten years ago, I was working in Thamesmead at a sewage treatment facility, every day to and from work I drove past a house with a lovely looking MK1 Fiesta Ghia sitting outside along side a white MK2. I'd knocked a couple of of times with no answer, but one day someone came to the door. I had a nice long chat with the owner, but he didn't want to sell the MK1, he had plans to fix it with his son, and the MK2 had sentimental value as it was his mother in laws car before it was his. Some years past, not sure, but I think about seven maybe. The MK1 had dissapeared and the MK2 had been stripped down to pretty much a rolling shell. I wrote a short note, just to say I'd still be interested in taking it on as a project if he ever thought about selling up. A few weeks (maybe months?) went by, and I didn't think I'd hear anything back, but Henry gave me a call, and asked me if I could weld, and if I'd take a look at the MK2, so I did. It was at this point (after inspection),I explained to Henry, that if it were my car I'd be doing all the welding, but it was just too big a job to undertake on behalf of someone else, and it might be worth reshelling it. Roll on January this year, Henry gives me a call, and basically, he's decided he won't ever get a chance to do the work on the car, and offers me the car. Obviously I was still interested, but had to have another look at the car. Glad I did really, it was worse than I remembered through my rose tinted spectacles. So here she is when I looked again.

Aye, there's a fair amount of rust, but I think overall it genuinely is better than it looks. In an ideal world I'd be completely stripping this down and giving it a complete rebuild, but given my time constraints (4 kids), and looking at the car, I've another plan. The floorpan is more or less solid, the sills also, so a little plating to those areas, a rebuild of the inner wings and boot floor corners should see this a solid little car again. I'm thinking fix those bits and roll it as it is, it's certainly got character!!! Anything I do to this will be done with either stuff I can pick up cheap as chips, or stuff I already have. Welcome to project shoestring!!!

This is the one I may be brave enough to lift the sound deadening carpet sometime this week. Wonder how flinstone'esque it'll be. Shrug.

You must be a sucker for punishment with 3 of these as projects.lol. Good luck and look forward to the updates on all of them. I remember when I was 17 in my nova Sr having a play with a 1.4s and my nova couldn't touch it. These 1.4 cvh engines had terrible carbs on them and if you put a better replacement on it will be all good.

I just can't help myself when it comes to mk1/2 Fiestas! I've got a brand new late XR2 carb, so that'll probably go on the XR2, leaving the one that's on there available to fit This has an XR2 head on it, and apparantly it made it quicker. I always thought this was a bit of a no go as the bore's smaller on the 1.4, so fitting an XR2 head decreases compression. By how much would depend on whether it has a lean burn or hemi head though. Hmmm, having said that, I've a few hemi heads knocking about. Oh and an R5GTT carb stripped down in a drawer. Tempting. But I'm purely concentrating on the red one for the moment. Should be some updates regarding that soon. Currently have the head apart and cleaning up everything bar the carb.

I brought a combi van once with rebuilt 1.6 cvh bottom end but was fitted with a 1.4 head and carb. Ran but not very well but never had any experience of the other way round. I brought a rough low milage 1.6L orion and put all the running gear in the tired van and it was a nice drive then. Gone are the days of picking up such £100 bargains now though.

You're right, not too many bargains about any more in regards to older cars, then again, they were just 'bangers' at the bottom of the market waiting for the rise. It's happening again now, some decent cars for peanuts with test about, just not the kind of cars I'm interested in unfortunately I thought it would be a good idea to remove the sopping wet sound deadening from the front end, pleasantly surprised as it goes, with the amount of water in the stuff, I was certain I'd find some big holes. Unfortunately, I wasn't as impressed with the big holes up behind the dash where the inner wings used to be. But on a lighter note, original stereo is cool, mainly because it's the original stereo, not because it's cool :/ I'm sure I've got a period correct Ford stereo with lcd display somewhere. I did at one stage. Lets hope my Dad hasn't binned it. He did that with my first MK2, think that might be why I have issues collecting Fiestas!

I've stumbled on your thread in the past as it goes. Thanks for bringing it to my attention again, gives me something to aspire to! Absolutely love it. Very understated little car.
