but thought i'd share with you the best ride i've had for months.
the Rover 216 GSI
in terms of engine, driving position and ride quality they are fantastic.
fortunately they look less than ordinary so attract non of the wrong attention!
£200 well spent.
anyone else rate a less than cool car they (shamelessly) enjoyed? ;D

LOL. No.
Other than the Daihatsu 4Trak (I think it was) - the smallest 4x4 ever! it's pocket sized, literally and so silly

Besides all the brick shaped Volvos I've been loving since they were still making some of them, even though they're massively uncool these days, I had a brief run of Astras bought for practically nothing and used and abused as daily drivers a couple of years back, we had a great little metallic gold one that was unfortunately trashed on a main road in icy conditions, strange I can't seem to remember anything about the crash besides being hugely confused after it, I must have been in shock or something!

I had a brief run of Astras bought for practically nothing and used and abused as daily drivers a couple of years back, They do make rather good biffabouts, don't they? I had 3 cheap(ish) ones in the last few years: 1. G373SGU Blue Mk2 Estate 1600. Bought for £275. Ragged the off it for 9 months, off-roaded several times, (both intentional and unintentional ), filled with mountains of Survey kit and beasted over 12,000 miles in that time. Eventually the back suspension gave up the ghost, as did the (190,000 mile) engine which dropped all it's oil on the M1. Sold for £50 as spares or repairs 2. H471XGK White Mk2 Estate 1600. Bought to replace the above, with similar intentions in mind. Cost a whopping £700 as it was a low-mileage two owner car. Stolen, crashed and burned (sadly without thieving travellers inside) after just 4 weeks. 3. L75SWV Met. Green Mk3 1400LS. Bought from my idiot friend who thought a new rad was too expensive. Car was blatantly worth twice the £700 I gave him - he was just too idle to find out! Again, stuffed full of survey gear and thrashed around the UK doing over 20,000 in a year. Sold for £700 to a bloke who oddly didn't want the service book. Probably sold on by him with 50,000 less miles on it. I'm still kicking myself though. Despite it being slow and dull, and the inevitable curse word-taking by Jabbo, it was at least economical and 100% more reliable than the new Berlingo that replaced it (company vehicle? - never again!!!).

I have had itchy wallet a few times for a Rover 216GTi, the 3-door one is a bit too chav but the 5-door looks cool. They are about 130bhp as standard (rovers own 2.0 is only 140!) I've not driven a GTi one but they must be pretty rapid. And i agree the driving position is almost perfect.

Mk2 Golf 1.3 5-door. It was excellent! Did thousands and thousands of miles in it all over the UK. Really nice car that I wish I still had Daihatsu Sportrak. Deathwish cornering! Spent ages dicking around with the adjustable shocks. Lugged bricks car bits and allsorts in it. Blasted around in the mud, crashed it numerous times (it likes to pirouette in the wet!), and scared me mates to death with it!!

In a moment of maddness a few months ago I bought a Sunny Estate on ebay, mainly because the auction was nearly up and at £75 the car had no bidders so I couldn't resist. I went and got it only to find it's pretty mich mint apart from a couple of dings and only had 80k on it. All it needed for an MOT was two brake pipes and a number plate. Biggest suprise though was that it's actually really nice to drive. Very comfy seats and driving position and in spite of the little 1.6 OHC (E series) it actually goes pretty well too. The engine is strangely torquey low down which is a suprise for a relatively small engine and it will cruise at 90mph all day. It's very economical too. I think the only critisism I can lay on it is that the handling is a bit wallowy (not helped by soft rear shocks though) but once you get used to it you can really chuch it round corners. Here it is after a good polish (it was nearly pink it was so oxidised) All in all it owes me £135 with a full MOT

I've been getting the horn in a big way for one of these lately too; cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4503091307&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:ITAt 137bhp for the 1.8 GTI non-cat job they must be pretty zippy, and also they remind me of Jackie Chan in those silly Cannonball films (I know, I know, he was driving a Starion or something) I think the auction for this particular one is a bit suspect cos it's whanged right up to 500quid, but the last bid from anyone with more than one feedback was me, at 325. There's a war of suspect bidders going on. There's a couple of others on the bay but they are all a bit ropey.

Must admit I've got a soft spot for my Skoda Favorit.... roly - poly handling a la Renault 5, 40 odd to the gallon, and dirt cheap spares (like £15 + VAT for new master cylinder) .....and it sailed through the MOT yesterday Best of all, by no stretch of the imagination is it a chav-mobile
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Best of all, by no stretch of the imagination is it a chav-mobile It's possible tho'. The one in our family has got a big stereo, tinted windows and polished alloys. Oh, but it's also got a water leak and a sheared driveshaft. It may never make it back onto the road.

All that talk of jackie chan reminded me of an old subaru i borrowed of a mate a few years ago. It was a coupe and it looked just like the canonball car. It had loads of goodies too, the 4wd used to come on whenever you touched the brakes or turned the wipers on. It went like stink too, 1.8 turbo i think. I'd have bought it if the ends hadnt been hanging out but it sounded like a diesel transit and the thought of shelling out for a new engine put the fear of god up me.
