So I'm having one of those 'life laundry' moments where I've realised that I have too many cars, too much stuff, and just not enough time to work on any of it. So it's time to clear the lot out, starting with the pride and joy of my garage.
Mk1 MX5 Eunos 1.8 S Special in Laguna Blue
MOT until August 2016 (no advisories, and and has been garaged since)
167,000Km (roughly 103,000miles)
THE GOOD
All the usual refinements of the MX5 but as it’s a Special you also get the Bilstein suspension, thicker sway bays, snazzy yellow strut brace, Nardi steering wheel, rear spoiler and headrest speakers (although these are dead – I’ve stripped the seat covers back and they’re toast – I’ve been trying to source shallow replacements but they’re hard to come by). Sadly not got the original BBS wheels (the current ones are actually early Renault Clio) as these were destroyed in a garage fire ☹
Seat covers replaced 2 years ago, still nearly new. Shiny roll bars also fitted (purely decorative though).
Alpine stereo with aux in, upgraded door speakers and small amplifier in the boot. Does need rewiring mind - the speaker wires have frayed at the doorposts - not a big job.
Cone air filter and stainless exhaust so it sounds like it should.
Regular oil changes (every 6 months, if not more often) along with leads and spark plugs. Had new front washer jets. Some history, but been maintained by myself since purchase.
New oil rocker cover gasket 18 months ago - solved a minor oil leak around the back of the block.
New front discs and pads 18 months ago, new rear discs and pads and an oil/spark plug change for last MOT. Also replaced OSF caliper and NSR caliper replaced and rebuilt for MOT. Now starts, stops, goes as it should. Has NEVER let me down in 3 1/2 years of ownership.
JDM plates YO! ;-)
THE NOT SO GOOD
Does need a new aerial – the old electric one seized last winter but a replacement is easily sourced online and fitment a doddle.
Occasionally a little tappety on cold startup, and the stainless exhaust bounces off the heatshield until it’s warmed up. I usually flush the engine with Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment when I do an oil change and this keeps it quiet until next oil change.
Hood is sound, keeps water out but a little frayed in places.
There is a chip in the windscreen but v. small and out of MOT area – been there since I bought it, never gets any worse.
Rear arches are beginning to bubble up – this is only major letdown. Not mentioned on MOT but if I was keeping it I’d want to either cut back and proof or replace.
Viewing welcome - I'm on my Easter hols at the minute, so the next couple of weeks are good - from near Stansted, Essex
I'm looking for £1200 ONO
