Heres the build thread, wont be much building yet, still drivin round wearing it out while sorting the bits & pieces for the rebuild. Mainly fixing easy stuff for now, got a motor to build- cant find the right crank yet & have a sierra 5 speed to throw in soon, its away getting housing welded back up now. Not a lot of rust to sort mostly some panel damage from the 1st owner, he was made to sell it by his family they figured at 99 he was becoming a hazard to everyone else.

Some random snaps of some of the stuff done so far Sizing up the mags i'd bought On hoist to see how rough it is underneath, think it'd been used as a landrover some of the time. after mags went on left front tyre rubbed a bit on chassis rail, tape measure confirmed left side shorter than right. Tug on chassis straightener fixed that yep it's english - oil everywhere lol Some of the panelbeating that needed doing, got the pros to straighten the bumper for me, both front guards still need to be dealt to, the front end really needs stripped right down to get it dead right, previous owner once hit the back of his garage, that has to wait till i get the ute on the road Worse part of the interior, upholsterer had vinyl almost a perfect match, dash top is stuffed too- pity is a red interior, limits colour options when we paint it. Could change it but finding better might be a mission- & i can live with it. Some other touching up & i've put a tow bar on too- for a bike rack- it's too gutless to tow a trailer. Behold...... the the horribleist job so far, the heater, fun to get out, yea right, leak was easy to fix - getting it back in? with new foam etc took 3 goes to get squared up. Why bother fixing it? hey i might live in a south pacific island but it is at the bottom end!!! Maybe i should've got a 4wd, clue as to some some of the places i go when i'm fishing, when its all flashed up i wont be so brutal - maybe. Somewhere in here is an avenger, slobbery sods made a fair mess, lol, not parking anywhere near them again- only 1 thing worse & thats when the dopey sods follow me & spook the fish!!! In the works, top crank avenger bottom 1 toyota- make toyota fit, hehehehehe no substitute for more capcity & it'll look boringly standard avenger, final size be determined by crank/rod/piston combo looking @ 1900cc

YAY!! Great to see another Avenger on here. You say too gutless for a trailer, what engine is in it, 1250, 1300? If it's a 1500 or 1600, they'd pull a trailer ok.
Looks a pretty solid shell all in all. One thing I would recommend fitting (If you are a fairly spirited driver that is) is a chassis rail brace on the front end of the chassis legs. That stops the outward stress on the chassis rails under heavy breaking, which in turn stresses them and causes them to rust and weaken until the rust right through and break away, allowing the front wheel on that side to move back and fore. It tightens them up and does make the steering and braking a bit more positive.
Crank swap looks interesting. They're very close aren't they (going by the pics)
Will
Bookmarked!! ;-)

HA HA HA, yea an empty trailer it's 1500, a sad smoky oil burner that oils it's plugs if it's nannyed round town too much. It's getting braced top & bottom with gussets where legs meet firewall too. Only planned to be a road car i can still do the odd gymkhana/ sprint/hill climb in. Who knows maybe i'll cage it later when the kids are gone.
Cranks are very close, toyota journals are slightly bigger diameter, centre main is a bit narrow- block & cap needs skimmed a little, toyota nose can be turned down & trimmed for avenger timing gear to slide straight on, look carefully at the back of the 2 cranks, toyota journal isn't as wide doesn't extend past the block when fitted- custom flywheel perhaps? + the toyota 1 is way too heavy coz it's a truck 1.
Overall the shell is pretty solid, no salt here on our roads & it spent its 1st 40 years in Central Otago.

Has potential alright, we're stuck at the moment, the toy crank in the picture has too big a stroke- it'll fit add conrods & we need to grind chunks out of the block, pity cos that would've potentially got @ 2.1L. Pretty sure at that size there wont be room in the head for ports big enough.
The crank we actually need is proving hard to find, it's a mid 80's 1800 petrol we need, heaps of 2 & 2.2s still around
We're looking at using Mazda 626/Ford Telstar valves as length & collet groove almost identical stem diameter only a fraction bigger, heads are too big means we can turn them down to the size we want & port to suit. Spring cap choice will depend on assembly as 626 1's look to work with avenger double springs too
Scouring the web @ the time i got car found reference to some mythical avenger motor built in N.Z. with a ford (cortina?)crank, the guy is just up the road from here, he's not saying how he did it, if pockets were deep enough he could build me 1. Not building a race/rally car here.

Mine is a road car and was a single carb 1500 originally, but healthy and low miles, so it went pretty well. I've put a 1600 from a Sunbeam ti in now, but the bottom end is all lightened and balanced, AVFR5 cam, head is a Talbot ex works big valve ported and polished item. The valves are too big for road use really, but the price was right. There's not much grunt below about 1500, but picks up nicely from there on and pulls like mad from 3000 through to 7500 ;-)

Great to see another avenger- from the right side of the planet- lol. I kept missing your thread because of the VW heading, would love to get my hands on an 1800 block that would give us more options with conrod length & piston pin height with the bigger stroke we're using.
Have seen 1 1800 avenger in action in N.Z. the parts bin special of Andrew Cowan he used to win the 76 heatway rally

Any possibility of using a Hunter donk.?
Might not be much of a weight penalty with the alloy head...
The extra torque offered by a larger capacity block makes a huge difference in tractability.
Just fitting a 2 litre in place of the 1275 in the Marina van - should be fun.

In my experience with hunter engines the kindest thing to do with them use them as boat anchors.
My engine builder sees this as an interesting engineering challenge. Not often does 1 get the oppurtunity to do something this different
A 2L in the Marina will make it go rather well

Yea, overall it's fairly solid, has had a hard life though it's loose & rattly in the body some of the seams & joints will need attending to soon.

Been having a play with rear seatbelts out of a toyota caldina wagon, fitted the same way & run thru the speaker holes, makes for a tidier look too. Have had retractables in the front for a while - from a 90s Hyundai, tricky to find something that sits the right way & doesn't have a seat mounted buckle. Good use for a grille badge- replacement wheel i got last week.

Update, status quo remains EXCEPT FOR 1 minor detail FINALLY GOT A SUITABLE CRANK IN MY POSSESSION, off to deliver it to engine builder now. By the way it's still toyota but now it's a 3T not a 2Y.

Failed w.o.f (mot) before xmas, has a misfire AGAIN, haven't solved that yet. Ignored it for a while fixed corolla instead- that was enough of a hassle reminding me why i like simple cars. Corolla's been hijacked for a week & i'm stuck running round in escort, should've got a falcon- be cheaper to run. Avengers off the ground again, failed for blown strut & a tie rod no big deal except the strut's @ a year old, n.o.s, & rather than get another one the same have bit the bullet & ordered some Bilsteins all round. Should be here end of next week. Nothing happening with the gearbox yet, has a gear selection problem, the local 'specialist' couldn't work it out so it's stashed in a corner for now. Will have to look at a strengthening kit for the old hack, starting to come apart at the seams so she wont be on the road much longer. Find a towbar for corolla, empty out garage, & rip the front off. could be in there a while.

Latest update, still driving the bush basher, just as well, shifted house & it's the only thing with a towbar. Bilsteins are in, rides bit like a boy racers honda on on it's bumpstops round town but great on open road & gravel!
Change of plans again with engine, 3T doesn't work rear main journal smaller than avenger one, back to 2Y option- finally found 1 so it's all go once i pick it up
