Ok I'm after either a 7.5 ton horsebox or possibly Luton.
25ft long max to live on front driveway. These will fit in my driveway for sure and if I take crossbeam off gates down side of house.
I do have LGV2. (stupid EU name what was wrong with HGV2 it was more accurate as a title?)
I like Bedford Tk drove one for 8 years, Ford D series are OK too.
Leyland roadrunner another possibility, early Ford Cargo not joke Eurocargo model.
Like 50's stuff but what kind of cruising speed do they have? Ain't bothered bout mpg's!
I'd get a small class 2 but needs to fit driveway dimensions obviously.
Amazed at GMC WW2 trucks unworkable 22mph cruising speed and max speed of 28mph.
You apparently can't put another splitter box in as you'll break halfshafts. Same with higher diff!
Bedford QL is too slow and unstable allegedly.
Got 2 cars to sell to fund purchase but not really in need of one till Chevettes finished.
Seen Cargo's with patina and long test for £1500 on the bay of E's.
So enlighten me on anything I've missed.
Thx Ian

You can drive a tractor unit on your class 2 my mates have got 2 F10 Volvos and an Fl10 one of them only has a 7.5 ton licence. If your not using it for hire/reward you can tax it plg and for show use only they're mot exempt (at the minute although I think they'll close that loophole)

I'm not going to be able to put a Chevette on back of a tractor unit Daz!
I have driven a few when I used to trade plate mainly commercials.
I know about getting trucks taken off operators plating.
A lot of big sponsored racing teams do this which is illegal.
For hire or reward means no sponsorship at all. Even if you just had a tyre deal that would mean your running illegal.
I have no sponsorship and no intention of moving cars for other people.
This isn't what I was asking though.
I want recommendations of trucks that fit my purpose. Must be 25 foot long max covered and have room for car on back. Don't want a recovery truck as too much hassle insurance wise. Plus car and tools are exposed.
Most ex military old school stuff though cool are too slow! Anything ex military at present can be taxed PLG and rolling tax exemption applies to wagons.
Mot exemption is possible on ex military vehicles at present as you said!
Thx Ian

Is a horsebox big enough to get a car into the box area? If so there are still quite a few Bedford TKs in use and up for sale. A Ford Cargo would actually probably be cheaper to buy than a TK as they seem a bit unloved at the moment.

Thx dodgerover yep if I get the right wagon I'll have 16 ft internal length depending on bodywork. Will have to lose living quarters or make into toolbox/tyre + wheel storage. Width isn't a problem with HSR kit. Agreed TK's are going up as are Ford D series. I think it's better to buy what you really want rather than compromising but budget is always ruling factor. Cargo's don't seem to be made of best metal. Saying that tho our old TK did get a replacement cab off younger Vehicle. I'm steering myself away from TL range as diffs are meant to be weak on early models. Tho also read the AWD models from Bedford takeover are also junk. ? Cheers Ian

Thx Ian It didn't say anything in your original post about putting a Chevette on the back I thought you were after a truck to show so was trying to point out that you had other options. My choice for a 7.5 ton truck would be the roadrunner I hated the cargo's the only one you've not thought of is the old 814 mercedes my mate has one he loves it,rust is the main problem with them he's just re cabbed his. Other than that what about frankenhealey or glenanderson's threads on here re engineering old trucks with modern running gear

Thx Daz sorry dude I was typing like an ugly secretary when the firm was making cutbacks.
Battery was dying as I typed on phone. Sorry if I came across an RS I'm not like that!
I'll edit now so it makes sense.
I did think 814 but had read about rust issues. I don't think I'd want to be doing engine transplants at home on wagons. Trying to keep cars low-key.
MAN, Foden, Seddon Atkinson don't appear much idk why?
Drove a H plate Cargo for a couple of years seemed very reliable coz boss wasn't big on servicing. Just got brakes + tyres really.
Thx Ian

No bother mate don't worry about it. There's nothing wrong with the cargo it's a personal thing I just found them uncomfortable. I go to about half a dozen truck shows a year probably 80% of whats there are the more popular Volvo/Scania I think it's just what people drove/wanted to drive when they first passed their test. The only 7.5 tonner I've seen at a show recently was a roadrunner, the special edition high cab double bunk type, they were the best sellers of the day so there's maybe just more left. As for the older stuff I think you'll find it a bit too slow for regular use my mate got sick of his 45mph flat out TK and bought an 814 good luck with your search

Have you considered an old bus? Used to see loads of them in the 90's with cars in the back heading to the local banger tracks

I think you are right about the cargos liking to rot I remember the one from the local salvage place being in for a bargain basement tart up at maybe 6 years old and it was pretty crispy even then

Have you considered an old bus? Used to see loads of them in the 90's with cars in the back heading to the local banger tracks Was my first choice tbh but too long for driveway, plus swinging it in and out of narrow Street down side of 2 up 2 down not really viable. Maybe a swb coach with enough width to take Chevette? I'll check out the wagon threads on here recommended by Dazcapri. The Bedford kinda goes with Vauxhall chevette. Can see it now in DTV livery! Lol

There is only one ......

The TK always used to draw better money than the Fords in horsebox form, mainly because the TK cab didn't tip so the whole of the Luton was always usable whereas with the Ford a lot of that was lost.
Used to do a weekly run UK-France in an 814. It was a lovely truck to drive.

There is only one ...... That's beautiful but probably way out of budget. Funnily enough I'd downloaded that pic from surfing commercial threads. Was strangely thinking about flatbed with an airstreamer style rear on it. Another download from here after dreaming of it. Mate was talking about 814 Mercedes yesterday saying he was in one that blew up going up Parbold hill local steep hill on way from Latham towards M6 junction. I'll grill him for more details.[br Shamelessly stolen photo!
