I need to sort some reverse lights for my bedford. I know there not legaly needed, but id like them. Problem is, there is no switch provision on the gearbox. Any thoughts on how to rig up a switch? Also, are there any regulations that would effect what lights I use? Id like something quite bright (I was considering a spot light inside the rear windows).
The view from the mirrors isnt great, rear view mirror isnt good either. Reversing at night without lots of light may be awkward. Traditional small low level lights are only going to illuminate the areas I cant see anyway.

Hi, No more than two, 21w max per light, if not operated by the gearbox there must be an indicator light on the dash to show they are on. You can have a worklight on the back which is brighter but must have a light on the dash to show its use but you're not supposed to use it when the vehicle is in motion. Colin

Get one of the cree led work lights (flood pattern)and fix it on the roof pointing down and out, you should be able to rig a micro switch near the gear lever that is pressed when it is in the reverse position, use it to trigger a relay for the main load.

don't really want to mount anything on the roof, but ill sort something.
I thought it could be on an illuminated switch but I read it must only illuminate when reverse is selected.
Maybe ill just bang a suction soptlamp in back window and just not worry about it.
I don't often reverse around cops.

In this thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=10&t=802912this is mentioned 4.4. Reversing lamps 4.4.10. Electrical connections It can only light up if the reverse gear is engaged and if the device which controls the starting or stopping of the engine is in such a position that operation of the engine is possible. It must not light up or remain lit up if either of the above conditions is not satisfied. but if I'm allowed a worklight and the only issue is vehicle cant be in motion, then I'm happy running a spotlight on a switch.

Hi You could try a reversing camera, they give a good view even in low light conditions. Some are even wi fi so no wiring to the screen, with it mounted inside the rear window pointing down and ignition wired you get better view than mirrors.

Means ugly install up front though.
Trying to keep everything minimal and 70's.
Seems I may have imagined the lamp I wanted though.
I'm sure you could get old chrome spotlamps that suctioned to the inside of the window but I cant find even a picture of one.

If you can fit something that takes standard bulbs I used to run a pair of 100 LED bulbs (modern ones are a lot more efficient so less LEDs) and they were as bright as low beams. I honestly miss them when driving anything else and will definitely build some into the truck because it makes life so much easier.
