Here's one I hope somebody can help with. ive got a two former keeper car in my garage, when it bought it I signed the trader yellow section. I don't want to add an owner but need to sorn it. Is there a way I can do it without adding my name to keeper section?

If it's in your garage, why bother to SORN it at all ? I haven't re-sorn'd mine during it's 2 years off the road.
As far as I know, it's only an offence to use the car on the roads without TAX, I don't think it's an offence to keep it in your garage without a SORN.

Vehicle Enforcement Policy This document sets out the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) enforcement policy for vehicle tax and registration in the UK. It describes the principles and practices underpinning the action taken on non-compliance, sets out the specific offences or penalties involved, and sanctions that will be applied. Vehicle Tax The correct amount of vehicle tax must be paid for all vehicles that are used or kept on a public road. Further information on the rates of vehicle tax can be found at GOV.UK. DVLA is responsible for collecting vehicle tax and maintaining an accurate register of vehicles and their keepers to support this. What are the vehicle tax requirements? It is the responsibility of the vehicle keeper to ensure that their vehicle is properly taxed. The vehicle keeper must: ï‚· make sure the duty is paid; or ï‚· make a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) if the vehicle is kept off the public road
Last bit says sorn if kept off public road

So what ? Do the local bobbies come round and check your garage ?
If it isn't on the road - nobody cares.
You don't have to follow EVERY rule in the book. Just use common sense.
I have 2 cars, both of which are in my name and both have been off the road (on private property) for years without a SORN. Nobody cares.

From previous experience if you fill in the trade slip there is no need to sorn. I never had a fine in the whole 7 years I was in car sales anyway and never sorned a single car that was in trade.

If the car is registered to trade it doesn't need to be SORN'd. If it's private reg'd it does as the DVLA will issue a fine, regardless of where the car is.

Cheers for trade info, So. If I decide to put it back on road, do I have to register it, then tax it? Or can I tax it under trader info?

You can still tax it whilst in trade. Just use the ref number off the new keeper slip.

Can you? So who does the automatic refund go to when the log book is finally filled in, keeping in mind vehicles commonly get shifted on several times whilst in trade

I don't think you'd get a refund, the tax would probably stay with the car for the next keeper as technically you've taxed it from the new keeper slip!
I found out this week that whilst you can tax a car from the new keeper slip, you can't SORN one. Wouldn't let me SORN the MR2 online that I've just bought.

Using the yellow slip as a trader you are accepting the car is temporally in your custody, so yes you can tax it and declare soon provided their is insurance without registering as another owner!
With regards to the new tax laws, when you buy a car, insure it and drive it home if it shows as taxed on line (easy to check) DVLA stating you can not drive it unless you tax it is just a way of making more money!!!! The current tax will not end until the previous keeper sends in the v5 doc. so if you tax the car before driving home, thats two lots of tax money they have had during the owner change over! it's legalised theft! you still loose a month as a seller and you loose a month as a buyer buying mid to month end as well!!!
Also if you have bought a car you need to sorn and only have the new keeper section, just ask the previous keeper to sorn it online for you. as this can't be done until you receive the v5 in your name, why is this??? well it's because they want you to shell out for a month or twos tax before you can sorn it thats why! crafty bastatrds!

The best way to drive a car on the road that you have in as a trade purchase is on trade plates not sure there's a way to tax it without been a keeper. All refunds go to the the registered keeper at the time of change.

If your tax runs out it should be SORN but this is now a one off thing not annually. Supposedly they should come chasing after you when your tax runs out and you haven't sorned. In reality they wait until you go to tax it and then try to hit you for a big fine then. That's actually rubbish as THEY are supposed to contact you in the first month with your first fine. Point that about to them and the big fine will go away. The bigger offence now is taking your car off the road and cancelling ( or changing ) insurance without SORN being declared Thi scome sunder CIE , Continuous Insurance Enforcement and is their new big money earner. Cars off the road before 1998 ( when SORN came in) do not have to be SORN nor is it even possible to do that.

I thought that to but i've recently got new log books through in my name for bikes which have been untaxed since the mid 80's then I got a last chance you must SORN now letter for each of them, declared SORN online as I couldn't be bothered spending hours on hold to the DVLA

The SORN stays with the registered owner, traders don't need to SORN a car if registered 'In trade' You shouldn't register a car In Trade if you are using it or keeping it as your own car and you can only do that if you have a traders insurance policy. with a personal policy you declare that the car is registered in your name.
