Ive been lurking on here alot again recently as ive started to pay the van a bit of attention again. Got a big list of things that need doing. Put some new brake shoes on the front a while back and put new wheel cylinders on it today. Strangely, the brakes worked fine, even and were not spongey but half of one front had no fluid in it! No idea how! So, thats done. Lots of other small bits to sort but next up is get the new wheels fitted, which means all brakes back off, halfshafts out, and redrill the PCD. Then get new wheel nuts, polish the wheels, and spend a fortune on tyres. Ill try and get some pics of the process.

Ok, so front hubs redrilled. Thought id hang a wheel off the studs and see how it sits. Bit more poke than i thought from the measurements. I could use the 7s on the back and try and find some 6s for the front but i don't see that happening! I could run them with poke, but looks a bit silly and may be a police magnet. I could fit on some cheap bolt on arches and MAYBE, possibly, at some point in the future make some steel arches if i ever managed to buy a house with a driveway.
Anyone got any suggestions for bolt on arches? (Or a pair of 6x14 appliance wire mags?)

The wheels are 5x4.75, the van was (well, still is) 5x6".

I'm now also a little concerned about how much the wheel offset change is going to effect how it drives. Id measured so many times and i thought these were going to end up flush with the arches, but they are 25mm past!
I'm unsure whether to run them or sell them. I could buy one more part worn tyre and get the fronts on and see how it drives, but i need to buy more wheel nuts too (7/16 sleeved). I guess thats £50 to get to a point where i could test them out. But even if they are ok, i don't really want to add arch extensions.
I may fit porsche cookie cutters but id need to open out a step in the centre bore. They have the disadvantage of using m14 studs and a quick search shows they wont be cheap. Cheaper tyres though as 15".
Or, i could get some spare steels and band them. Tyres are still expensive but id be changing offset less and i could make them fit exactly as i want.
I may just stick with stock wheels and sulk about it for a while and see what my mind decides.

A narrower tyre would help reduce the poke. You don't need to go silly stretch, just to take out a bit of the balloon of the sidewall on what you've got on at the moment. If you're lucky, it'll pull the tread in far enough that it won't look like they're Carlos Fandangoing, just a little bit meaty to match the styling of the van.

The tyre on the wheel is a 205/70/14 on a 7" rim. It just looks odd as the tyre is completely loose on the rim, both tyre beads are sat in the central well. I could get the tyre on the wheel but my compressor wouldnt pop the beads on as they are too far from the seating area. I could go smaller, ive not bought the tyres ill be running yet. Not sure id go 195/75/14 on a 7 inch rim, might be too small.

Ah, I didn't realise the tyre was loose there, that certainly would change how it looks. How frustrating, they're a well suited wheel to the van. I suppose the only way to find out if the 195 option is suitable is to get hold of one and have it fitted to see how it looks. I assume you've had it on the ground so you can check it's not just the suspension sag that's making the wheel stick out, I wonder if when it's on the ground, the top of the tyre will actually sit further in that it does in those shots.

It may do a little, i had a jack under the suspension to try and get it up to ride height but it was probably a little off. They do really suit it. I don't have suitable wheel nuts yet though. I havent given up on this combo yet, current plan is to get the fronts bolted up with some cheap part worns on and drive it, see how it feels with the change of offset. I have leads on a set of 6 inch turbo vecs and a set of 6 inch torque thrusts but they wont look as cool as the wire mags.

The other thing is most of that visible tread is on the return to the sidewall, it doesnt touch the road. If i can find tyres where the tread doesnt reach around so far i recon you may not see much.
Still poke though and thats not really the look i was after.
There is still the 'sod it, ill fit a sheet steel box body kit' option, not entirely ruled that out. If it was a panel van id have arched it years ago!

Thanks, appreciate the offer, but i have some 185 14s already, admittedly they are currently fitted to the van, but i can swap them about easy enough. My current plan is to put my 205 70 14 on one wheel and a 195 70 14 on the other and try them both. If 195 70 is too wide buy not stretched i can then put my 185s on the wore mags. Current thinking is 195 70 on the front and 215 75 on the back (not too common those though).

Just managed to get my girlfriend to watch 'hot rod' and now I'm wondering if i should just run the black steels up front and my widest mags on the rear 😎

Only if you jack the back up a bit and put sidepipes on. It's the law.

Been incredibly slack with pics but have been chipping away at this trying to get it ready for going away. Ive fitted new wheel cylinders and shoes, finished redrilling the brakes, painted the rear axle, rebuilt the starter, got the water level gauge working, made a new earth lead, fixed the fuel tank breather so it no longer stinks inside, fixed a door pod and am currently rebuilding my spare lower arms as they have better bushes. I need to replace all the ball joint boots as the new ones i fitted were awful and put the spring isolators back in.
Giving it a bit of a going over mechanically to make sure it stays reliable and drives nice, new ignition parts, engine mounts, carb rebuild etc, then once ive been away ill strip the engine down for new gaskets and a repaint then hopefully finish the interior.
When stuff worth taking pics of happens ill take some! I still need to sort out my other wheels, finish the curtains, recover the seats, fit new carpets and do something with the cupboards, either paint or build new ones.
Loads going on, loads still to do!
