Can be brilliant!
Not only have my usual company always beat any quote (half anyone elses on the bedford ive just bought) they have also said they will issue cover without payment on this new van so if for any reason the purchase falls through I can just let them know and its all cancelled with no costs! If they don't hear from me by the day after I'm Supposed to collect the van, they will take payment.
I was super impressed with this.
Is this normal insurance company behaviour?

Local company called ksl thomas.
Everywhere wanted 450+ to insure the bedford. They didnt even know what I had been quoted, straight out they quoted 220.
Ive been with them probably 15 years. I think thats why they sorted me out with cover before payment.

I've found bike insurers to be amazing. One policy I had was £200 for any 5 bikes as long as they are over 10 years old. They can't do enough to help me.
It's car insurers where I have had more problems. The biggest issue I've had is having my Celica and changing to a Jaguar, I got told sorry they won't cover the jag, so I had to start with a new policy. Then I bought a Micra for a bit, again, the jag underwriters wouldn't cover the Micra, another new policy needed.
Then there's commercial insurance, I have a relay van and that's just over £200 fully comp, they have been brilliant with that.
I have my lass as a named driver on my Audi and I asked how much extra for the year to add commuting on so she can use it if there's snow, only £20 for the year. Sometimes they can be great. Bit of peace of mind for us both as her bmw is nasty in the snow.
It's nice to hear a good story about insurance for a change.

It's nice to hear a good story about insurance for a change. That is exactly why I posted this thread.

I wanted temp cover for a car I was thinking about buying but my insurance company said they couldn't do it as the car value wasn't high enough ! Companies who provide good service deserve the extra business, I will give them a try next time I need a quote.

I firsr went with them as I had bought a mk1 golf and needed it legal that day. It was afternoon and I could walk to them and get cover note so I could go post office and get tax. Obviously all before computerisation. Been with them ever since. Ive never asked them to beat a quote, they have just always been cheapest.
I havent ever had a claim (in all my 20 years driving!) so no idea what there like in that situation. I suspect they would be spot on though.

Ive never asked them to beat a quote, they have just always been cheapest. I havent ever had a claim (in all my 20 years driving!) so no idea what there like in that situation. I suspect they would be spot on though. This! For me, the ability to just wander into my local broker just made so much more sense, to the extent it would negate any couple of quid savings by going on-line. Turned out they were normally cheaper anyway, on the odd occasion I did look around. Again, I never had a claim but preferred the idea that if I did, I could sit across the desk from a real human being rather than getting stuck on the faceless, "Press 1 for this, press 2 for that" treadmill! So yes, give your local broker a whirl, you may just be pleasantly surprised. Here I expected things to be a real pain but it's so easy. Yes, their office is a good way from me but I have the personal mobile number of the agent who deals with our vehicles. I haven't had to claim but when Madam decided to duke it out with a Jeepney, it was, "Get it into a body shop, let us know which one and we'll deal with them direct." No fuss, no hassle and even more amazingly, no effect on the next years premium. Come renewal time, they ring up to confirm, then send a little guy on a motorbike to meet you at your home/office/bar/wherever, with your new docs and he either collects the cash or swipes your credit card. Your beer doesn't have time to get warm Apparently, after nearly three years with them, "You good customer" so I'd had my new policy for nearly a month (as the guy forgot his card machine) before anyone finally got around to collecting any premium. Brilliant! In Malaysia, there was no point shopping around for two reasons; 1) Rates were centrally set, so standard price and 2) not one single person I knew with a claim got paid out. Ever.

It's a strange thing though, insurance, you never know how good it is 'till you need it & we all hope we never will, that's why everyone thinks the cheapest is the best. Not always the case, in fact in most cases, definitely not the best, but as said, hopefully you'll not need to find out.

Indeed.
But unless you go by online reviews or recomendations you'll never know.
I'm not going to pay more to a big company because I assume ill get treated better if the worst happens.
Ill go with whatever company offers a good deal and seams to operate nicely and stay with them untill they act in a way that makes me go elswhere.
So how do you pick a company? Only by review?

You are using a local broker not an insurance underwriter, that's the difference.
