I have seen a lot of threads in which people have said that their (generally) wives (sometimes husbands but rare!) don't like their retro car and want them to get rid of it or at least won't ride in it or drive it. I know this does not always happen but it can't be great for those folk whose other halves don't share their passion.
Anyway, here's my good news story.
I wanted a Volvo 740/940 and got the 940 that's in my sig a couple of months ago. It is mainly for my pleasure but my wife will probably drive it more as she works part time and I work full time. The first time I drove it scared me a bit as I hadn't driven an older car like this before. Canal barge handling and steering mixed with a very willing engine but very twirly steering was not easy to get used to but I loved it after a few drives.
I was dreading my wife driving it as if she hated it there might be the chance I'd have to change it for something else. NIGHTMARE.
On Monday night we went out for a drive with her driving and to my suprise she LOVED it - especially when I made her floor it ans she experienced the full 165bhp BrickPower Swedish Rocket experience. ;-) She had no problem taking round the country lanes, round corners faster than I was going on my first drive.
I couldn't be more pleased!
So what was my secret? She had been driving her Dad's Citroen Picasso for 3 months leading up to this drive and she said the Volvo was easier to drive, had better steering and handled way better!
SO plan ahead - make your other half drive a worse car than you want them to like for a bit!

My wife doesn't drive, apparently this means I can choose whatever I want...but she will let me know if she thinks it's ugly. That being said she was sadder than I at the loss of the Bedford CF2 Ambulance which I thought was one of te ugliest vehicles I have owned.

Ha - I have two E30's, a 318 is, (it's on here - somewhere) also a 316i (for sale - on here) I also have an XJS, and last Saturday, I went and bought a really nice Cavalier, now, my wife hates the BMW's, as does my daughter, she says, dad, they're older than me ! - the E30's are both 25 y/o, she is 23, and neither of them are too keen on the Jag, especially my daughter ! When my wife seen the Cavalier on Saturday, all she said is, mmm, its not as old as I thought it was gona be, in fact she/we used to have a mk 3 Cav years ago, and she really liked it ! Said to my daughter, "did you see I got another car" all she said was - yes - ? one word, that was it, not even, oh its nice, or anything !! Now that's what I call Zero, well actually, Sub Zero interest !!

When I bought my Legnum vr4 about 8 years ago I never for one moment thought that I'd have to consider battling for who gets the keys, she had never driven an auto, certainly wasnt a fan of big estates either. Nowadays we don't battle for keys, its her car and I bought myself a GTO and a Sierra! So be careful what you wish for!!

Turned up in a borrowed 1980’s Ford F250 once to ‘test the water’….
She blooming well loved it and thus once funds allow I have permission to get an old Step side project.

I'm lucky in that my other half loves cars and prefers older ones. Never a week goes by without me getting a telling off from her for selling my Celica. That was her favourite car of mine, she was always borrowing it. I let it go silly cheap to make room here after I had the stupid idea of building a drift car.

Mrs fp's car is a highly modified S2 Escort rs turbo which she isn't afraid to throw around, she goes around baiting other cars which is very amusing, she also provokes oversteer on my saph for a bit of fun, I think I may have taught her bad habits :-)

My wife drives an Evoque HSE disease auto (company car - she works for JLR) and enjoys the pace, quietness, comfort and smoothness of my 124. In fact the only RWD cars she's ever driven are this and my old 2.6 190E...

My ex used to leave for work before me, number of times I had to drive to work in her shonky old chod because she'd 'borrowed' by R32 Skyline.... Current OH is more than happy to go out for the day and let me have a drink, but only if we take my AMG E55 and not her automatic MK1 Fabia.... She's the only person, other than me, to have driven my offroader YJ Wrangler in the 12 years I've owned it and even then she's only driven it once. Destroyed the transfer box, but was full throttle in a mud pit when it let go! Can't be mad at her for that!

My wife hated driving my XC Falcon cos it has column change three speed manual with a heavy clutch and it has no power steering. She has never driven my Wolseley 1300 as she is afraid she'll do something silly and she won't even consider learning to drive the tractor. First wife would drive anything on wheels. When I bought a TK Bedford for work she insisted on getting a heavy licence so she could drive that too.

The only one the missus dislikes is the Metro because it's brown . To be fair it is very brown (brown paint, seats, dash and doorcards...) and it lives just outside the back door so there's no avoiding looking at it! Conversely she loves the 100E and the Minis' including the tatty noisy race Mk1.

My wife just hates my cars - period, when I've spent hours detailing them, and she comes out to se-e when I'm coming in, I'll say what do you think. without even looking she'll say, yes - i's nice - ie, no interest

Mrs FK had no interest in cars (mine or hers) when we met, when I first borrowed her car (Pug 106 1.1 in Doom Blue that she rolled in a country lane before shed even passed her test!!) to run an errand, I drove it down the road and the tracking was so far out if you let go of the wheel for a split second it would try to kill you by immediately spinning onto full left lock - consequent both front tyres were f@cked! Also the rears were on the limit, all of them were on under 20 psi and the exhaust was blowing so I drove it straight to my local tyre place. £250 later for 4 new tyres, tracking and an exhaust back box I ran the errand and gave it back with it running quietly / sweetly and tracking straight for what I assume is the first time in years; when we were next in it with her driving I asked, "do you notice anything different?" - of course she didn't!
When I pointed out she wasn't building her arm muscles to keep it in a straight line any more she clicked - "oh wow, I thought all old cars steer funny". She and all her friends thought I was mad for spending so much on her old car, especially as I'd only known her a few weeks at the time - she was glad of it two days later however when on a dark wet motorway she had to an emergency stop from 60 and only just managed to stop in time though - after that she's taken a much more sensible view of car maintenance and in tyres in particular!!
Also I've gradually converted her to old cars now, ever since I've introduced her to what a Triumph Herald looks like she's adamant we're getting (only the one with the" frowning face" will do mind). She also wants to get a Bedford CA camper when we get back too!

When I met my wife she was 100% not into cars. Only ever driven 4:
1.0 corsa b, 1.4 polo, 1.0 aygo and an ex's Celica 190 gen7 once... That she was adamant was a turbo, 'cause you could feel it'.
First date we went in my 200sx running 360+ bhp. I behaved, she hated everything about it. She did for the next 18 months until I sold it.
Since then she's put 60k on my Saab, lives it. Got her own gen 7 Celica that she loves.
Got an Austin 1300 together, that she loves to be in, but drives rarely.
But other than that, she's hated the rest... Hated; Alfa Romeo 146, BMW 320i tourer, mk2 focus estate.
She bent the mk3 Mondeo.. And didn't like it. Was a work horse though.
Now the Rover 220 GTI (r8)... She despises. Tolerated 2k miles in 2 weeks on honeymoon in it, hated it. It's broken down thrice on us... Hates it.
Hates the seat position, the colour, the lack if refinement.
Only time she doesn't hate it? When she drives it.progressed to "ooh its nippy" and I get the tank back empty.
But then hates the gearbox when cold, heavy brakes, and gruff engine note.
