Offered for sale is this really nice original and usable example of the fast appreciating MK2 Golf. We have recently bought a larger estate car and with two other classics in the family it's time to say goodbye to "Gertie".
Being a late model "Driver" this car has nice spec with PAS, central locking, better speakers than standard (separate tweeters in the dash), driving lights, fancy wheel trims and a sporty but comfortable interior.
Mechanically the car is excellent. The 1600cc engine runs spot on and uses no oil. The automatic gearbox works without fuss. The car is nippy in town, easy in traffic (runs cool and has never overheated) and for its age and size surprisingly good on longer motorway trips. Sits at 80-90 all day no problem.
The bodywork is almost entirely rust-free and has never had, or needed any welding repairs to the best of my knowledge. There's a tiny bit of surface rust/bubbling around the LHD wiper blank and a little bit of bubbling on the bottom of one door skin - that's about it. The paintwork is in reasonable condition and polishes up nicely although there are some small dents and scratches here and there as well as some lacquer peel.
Interior is really nice, no significant damage apart from some sagging to the headlining at the rear which could be quickly and easily sorted. I fitted a relatively high-end Grundig "Advance" cassette head unit which sounds great.
Currently insured on a classic policy for about £150 a year, it's also pretty good on fuel, and parts are inexpensive and easy to get hold off. It makes for cheap entry into the whole VW scene, if that's your thing. It's old enough to be simple and easy to maintain but modern enough to be comfortable, reasonably quick and easy to drive.
The car is currently taxed, MOT'd and insured so I am happy to take you out for a spin in it. If you hand over the readies you can drive it home.
History:
I bought the car 3 years ago after a long search, have used it regularly (it's been our main family car) and kept on top of the maintenance. No major issues in my ownership, and the car has never let me down. This is a reliable, low mileage, classic which is a pleasure to drive.
It's had regular oil changes and servicing in my ownership. The car comes with a good stack of history with only 3 previous owners. The first owner kept the service book stamped up for the first 60,000 miles. The second owner was an elderly lady who always kept it garaged and covered just 10,000 miles over 14 years. She passed the car on to her (middle-aged) grandson in 2010 who also appears to have looked after it.
Work done in my ownership:
23/5/13 (85,000 miles) - Oil & filter changed, 2 x rear wheel bearings, front brake pads replaced. New engine mount, PAS belt, and various sundries
7/3/14 - 2 new tyres, tracking done
Oct-14 (90,218 miles) Exhaust silencer replaced. Full service: oil & filter change, air filter, new spark plugs, ignition leads, distributor cap, rotor arm
9/10/2015 (92,000 miles) Cam belt replaced, new radiator fitted, oil and filter changed
8/02/2016 (93,498 miles) Brake master cylinder replaced
Good points:
Remarkably rust free - never welded
Runs and drives spot on
Relatively low mileage
Very recent cam belt
4 good tyres
Interior very tidy and original
One off custom aerial
Not so good points:
A few small dents and scrapes.
Headlining sagging at rear.
Front shock absorbers / top mounts tired (advisory on last MOT).
We'll be sad to see Gertie go. The car's very much been a member of the family, and I doubt I'll ever find a more solid and original mk2 than this again.
