Morning RRers, I'm looking for a reliable cheap to run car for the other half, it'd be her first car as she's learning to drive at the moment and once passed she'll be driving up to 30miles a day to her work. Ideally I'd like something a bit different! Not your run of the mill 206 or corsa. I have a 2000 BMW e46 1.9 petrol with a years test on which could be used in a swap. Thankyou for looking.

I'm running a crappy old megane mk1 at the moment . Ok they do not look great but they are a bargain . I do 500 miles a week in it costs £45 to fill up .
Parts are dirt cheap , £20 for pads , exhaust is about £70 for all of it . Brakes, radiator , bearings driveshafts all cheap .
And you can pick a nice clean one up for about £600 , even P/X as no one wants them . They have usually been owned by one middle aged lady from new and serviced on the button as a second car .
Mine was like that and cost £200 £80 for a wheel bearing fitted and 12 months mot . After a week it was fine after a few high speed runs to clear out the cobwebs .

Would you be better of working out what she will be able to afford to insure first?

Ha I'd like a reliant myself as I'm only going to be driving 8mile a day. Honda Jazz sounds good I've worked on a few. Fiestas are good too, I just think the decent unrotten ones are getting thin on the ground

Citroen AX or Visa, petrol or diesel both are economical, Renault 5 - either shape again petrols are cheap to run and easy to drive. All these are simple to maintain and unlikely to throw a wobbly leaving your other half stranded and making irate phone calls wanting a 'new' car

Kitcar? K10/K11 Micra seems to have a following here. As others have said, insurance is going to be the biggest cost, I would be looking at what's affordable on that front first.

I like the micra, it's just the persuading her that it is a good car. I sold my Mg zs to buy her a Ford ka, we called it krusty. It was fun to drive even when the power steering packed up!

1993 Rover 214 Si 3dr? Less than 600, mot till July and only £350.... More info please!!!! I'll post some pics up as soon as Pbucket will let me.... It's in a good usable condition.Drivers armrest has collapsed and the rear headlining is starting to droop I bought it New Years Eve as I've always fancied the 3dr shape, and being green makes it look smart I drove it home to N Shrops and it hasn't moved since, and now I've bought a Leon Cupra I can't see it getting the the use it deserves 1 or 2 stonechips to attend to,and the drivers rear arch has seen some repair work. It'sbeen well done but you can see if you know where to look Needs a good run to blow out the cobwebs Needs to go really so good offers will be considered,or may take any Mk5 Rs2000 parts/wheels in px

Check insurance first, I found fiestas to be one of the most expensive cars to insure. Actually was cheaper to insure a Carrado 16v lol.

As said, check the insurance. Despite what a friend of mine in the industry told me I did not find it to be the case.
However, a friend of mine may be getting rid of a 106 1.5 Diesel with 32,000 miles on the clock soon.
