Factory options; Metallic paint. Dealer options; Static seat belts front, reflective number plates, Endrust treatment.
EXTERIOR
The exterior of this range topping 1300XL is truly fantastic both in its condition and originality having covered a mere 25,336 miles from new. Finished in optional Ford Tawny Brown (code S), the largely factory original coating has a deep polished shine and a pleasing uniform finish which is outstanding. Very minor touched in stone chips and light scratches in no way detract from the fantastic appearance of the car. Equally the immaculate boot area houses the jack with correct and often lost rubber bung and spare wheel with the original cross ply tyre. Structurally this car is remarkable having been Endrust treated from new, the injection holes holes still visible in the door shuts. A very discreet lowering of just one inch gives the car an awesome stance without detracting from its humble beginnings. A real eye catcher!
INTERIOR
The interior of this cherished top of the range example has been beautifully preserved. The XL specific deeply embossed upholstered seats in Black (code AA) are virtually unworn and absolutely commensurate with the cars incredible low mileage. The headlining is tight and very clean. This XL model features the GT style larger instrument binnacle to house the extra gauges including oil pressure, temperature, battery indicator and tachometer. The fascia remains absolutely intact with all simulated wood cappings present and all functions and controls operating perfectly. Only minor wear to the black loop pile carpeting can be seen. This interior really is a beautiful, unspoilt place to be and exactly how Ford intended.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Originally fitted with Fords 1298cc OHV Crossflow unit, a 1650cc Crossflow engine has been fitted out of an Escort Harrier with twin 40 Webber carburettors and full Ashley exhaust system. The work has been completed to an exceptional standard, the previous keeper being an engine builder by trade. Importantly, absolutely all components have been carefully retained to enable simple conversion back to standard should the new owner desire, including the matching numbers factory fitted low mileage engine. The engines fires up immediately and provides an exhilarating engine note with more than enough capability to keep up with modern traffic. A wonderfully original and spotlessly clean engine bay still displays the factory plates and tags and the strut top chassis number remains clearly visible. Even the hardboard sump guard remains intact, virtually unheard of! The four speed gearbox with synchromesh on all forward gears allows light and precise progression up the range, an absolute joy to operate.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Four desirable and valuable Lotus Cortina pressed steel wheels are in pristine condition and shod in matching quality 185/60 R13 Avon tyres with masses of tread. The wheels give the car an tremendous presence whilst retaining the classic ‘oldskool’ Ford look. The standard pressed steel wheels with original chrome hub caps have been retained with the car. A conversion to Capri 2.8 front struts with vented discs and single leaf rear springs allow improved handling and stopping capabilities, again with all original components carefully stored and retained with the car.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 5th January 1973 by Ford Main Dealers Temple Meads Motors of Bristol, this brilliant example has had just three owners from new and covered a mere 25,336 miles. A new vehicle order form and subsequent invoice made out to first owner Mr Eric Beaver depicts a purchase price including optional extras of £1,047.74. Upon his passing in 1990 ownership of the car went to his son Colin Beaver who garaged the car unused until the third keeper Mr Martyn Compton purchased it. A substantial MOT history fully documents the exceptionally low mileage with MOT certificates missing only for the years between 1991 and 2003 when the car was off the road and inherited by Mr Beaver Jnr. Mr Compton has enjoyed the car for classic shows and no less than six Snowdonia Tours. It is highly regarded within the Ford community.
The original Temple Meads Motors black plastic document wallet contains the service booklet, handbook and even the Endrust guarantee card and ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ rear view mirror hanger! The large history folder further consists of many receipts and invoices throughout the life of the vehicle, including supporting documentation and list of modification undertaken whilst owned by the previous keeper. The car represents a fantastic testament to a true Ford icon with tasteful modifications undertaken sympathetically by an individual aware of how special this car is. Absolutely all components to convert this example back to factory standard have been carefully stored to be retained with the car.
