Probably the lowest mileage Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth in the world, just 5,984 miles
MODEL HISTORY
Five hundred extra special examples of the 150 mph Ford Sierra RS Cosworth went on sale in Britain on August 1st 1987. This more powerful ‘evolution’ model was introduced to allow Ford to develop the original limited production run of 5,000 needed to allow the car to be homologated for International Touring Car Racing in Group A. Aston Martin at Tickford were assigned with converting the 500 cars and in addition to the more powerful 224bhp engine, (with the potential to exceed 400bhp in race trim), numerous aerodynamic features were incorporated in the bodywork. These include a 30mm lip spoiler applied directly to the rear edge of the tailgate to increase rear downforce. New and larger cooling ducts were included in the design of the front bumper for the intercooler and the front brakes, as well as an aerodynamic splitter. The vehicle was only available through 90 specialist Ford RS (Rally-Sport) dealers in Britain at a cost of £19,950. (Source Ford News Release 87/76). This example is build number 455/500.
EQUIPMENT
Bodyside mouldings, integral front air dam, colour coded door mirrors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, colour coded lockable fuel filler cap, bonnet cooling vents, halogen headlamps, colour coded bumpers, single plane rear wing spoiler with trailing edge fence, lower tailgate mounted spoiler, tinted glass all round, tailgate wash/wipe, laminated windscreen, central locking, extended centre console, cigar lighter, quartz digital clock, fascia light dimmer, leather gearknob, leather three spoke sports steering wheel, 3-speed heater fan , cassette storage, electronic sound system (model ECU2) with power amplifier, electric aerial, Recaro Sports front seats, split folding rear seats, tilt and slide sunroof, tachometer with turbo boost gauge, trip recorder, anti-locking brake system with failure warning light, electric front windows.
EXTERIOR
The commanding exterior of this RS Cosworth is breath-taking and nothing short of simply magnificent. Finished in ultra rare Ford White, (just one of 56 made), the paintwork boasts a deep gloss shine from the original, unrestored factory finish. All exterior trim, glass and lights remain free from damage as does the vulnerable front splitter. The unique silver coachline and RS500 badges applied to the front wings and tailgate are still present. Date stampings are visible on key areas such as the inner wings and tailgate and even the discreet Ford logo can be seen on the slam panel. The underside is spotlessly clean and perfectionists will marvel at seeing the PDI colour dabs. A truly incredible car in an astonishing preserved condition.
INTERIOR
The interior of this RS500 is simply beautiful. Finished in Ford Roma Grey (code S2), the Recaro seats and carpeted door trim are in remarkable condition with no wear or discolouration and completely commensurate with a very low mileage example. The driver’s seat bolster still has a soft velvet feel with perfect shape and the carpets are spotless. The interior equipment and trim is original and free from any modification or additions. A Cobra Cat1 alarm and Trafficmaster Trackstar were fitted in 2007 to enable GPS tracking. All dials and gauges operate perfectly and show healthy readings and the dashboard is immaculate having suffered no cracks or discolouration. The first aid kit is still in its protective film. The boot area is factory fresh with floor stickers present. A fantastic 1980’s interior, the embodiment of driving pleasure and excitement.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Cosworth YBD-Series 2.0 litre, 16 valve twin overhead camshaft, four cylinder, fuel injected, turbocharged and intercooled engine which in road use, (as per this example), is tuned to develop 224bhp. Features over a regular Cosworth include a Garrett T31/T04 turbocharger, twin fuel injectors for each cylinder, pressurised oil cooling for each of the engine’s pistons and a larger capacity oil and water pump. Expect 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 153mph. The engine bay is incredible in its originality and condition and boasts all the correct engine and chassis identification numbers. The gear changes are precise and tight with progressive clutch action thanks to a new cable being fitted.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Correct and undamaged factory fitted 15 X 7 inch aluminium alloy (ATS) wheels are shod in Dunlop SP Sport D40 205/50 VR15 tyres. The spare has never been fitted and is immaculate. Four wheel disc brakes with ABS and a hydraulic booster stop the car with confidence. The ABS module has been replaced due to an intermittent warning light and the rear brake pads have been replaced due to the originals starting to break up.
HISTORY FILE
Build number 455/500 has led a sheltered pampered life with each of the four former keepers acting as appreciative respectful custodians. Discovered by Joe Macari of Performance Cars London while visiting a wealthy owners Ferrari collection in Germany this pristine example just had to return with him. A deal was struck and in 2007 after being registered by Joe Macari himself it was sold for a record sum to a Ford enthusiast. A no expense spared mentality has been adopted with the correct upkeep and a recent invoice from Ford specialists, Tremona Garage in Southampton for £4,020.73 includes all fluids, belts and service items. Known on the RS500 build list, click here for details and described by Paul Linfoot, the official Ford Sierra RS500 Registrar as, ‘one of the lowest and would say one of the best for sure. How many white RS500s are left with those miles?’ This example presents as a significant and historically important Rallye Sport Ford and amazing collectors trophy.
