1996 (N) VW Golf VR6 2.8 5 door. Very low mileage. Just 63,300 miles from new!
I have decided that the time has come to put my Golf VR6 up for sale. What makes this example something a little bit different is the fact that it has only covered 63,000 genuine miles from new (I have lots of history to back this up). It has only had 3 owners from new and the last owner had the car since it was 1 year old. I still have the original invoice.
I bought this as an interim car to use for a couple of weeks after I sold my Mk5 R32 a year ago. Three months later and I was still using it. It has done me proud and hasn’t missed a beat. It honestly drives better than many newer cars I have driven. The VR6 power plant is very smooth and is certainly a lot quieter than the one in the Corrado VR6 I used to own.
Features of the car include:
• 2.8 litre 174bhp VR6 V6 engine. I have owned 3 derivatives of this engine and it is still a firm favourite of mine. Smooth and powerful.
• Flash Red paintwork
• 5 speed manual gearbox
• Electric Windows
• Electric sunroof
• Power assisted steering
• Cloth interior (in good condition, as you would expect of the mileage)
• A good sized folder full of history
• Fairly recent exhaust and brakes
• Morrette / Hella twin headlight conversion
• Fairly recent Sony CD head unit with iPod lead and USB connectivity.
• Original BBS Lattice 15” allow wheels with Pirelli P6000 tyres all round. (pretty good tread).
• Original VW marked glass all round.
• Working Clifford Concept 50 alarm system with total closure.
• 2 keys and alarm fobs.
• Original folder and manuals.
• Bodywork is generally rust free (see below). The arches are all solid. Panel gaps are all straight and true
I have just treated the car to an an oil service and a fresh MOT for the new owner, so it now runs until Feb 2017. It also flew through last years MOT with not even an advisory, which I think speaks volumes for how it has been treated in the past.
The car is almost 20 years old so there are bound to be one or two issues:
• Paintwork. This is the main issue with the car. Sadly the clear-coat lacquer has peeled quite badly on the roof and some on the boot lid. There are some smaller other areas of lacquer peel around the car, but I think the larger areas could be fixed for £200-£300 by your local friendly body shop. I have tried to show some of this peeling in the photos.
• Small area of rust spots on the lower part of the offside wing.
• One or two minor marks on the bumpers and paint fade on the rear bumper.
• Cracked front fog light
• Clutch doesn’t slip and is light, but the bite point is quite high.
• Sunroof works intermittently (sounds and runs smooth when it does work so I think it is a switch issue)
• Rear nearside window works intermittently.
• Small chip on windscreen. (not an MOT issue)
I will be sad to see this go, but I have a genuine reason for sale. With the paintwork and a couple of other minor bits sorted, I imagine it could be one of the nicer VR6’s in the UK. These cars are getting rare with this history and mileage and are looking likely to become a retro classic in future years.
I have been through the old MOTs and I have all of them from 1999 (the first MOT on the car at 3 years old) to 2015, with a new MOT going on the car on Friday 5/2/16. (along with an oil service).
