I had a weekend off the damn thing, Went back out there today fully intending to pull the engine and box, split the box and see whats occurring the gearbox is pretty unusual in as much you split the gearbox lengthways, apart from the tail housing images.app.goo.gl/j5e3Qo8Ry5yoR5vQ6so, I line up all the tools I think I will need, get the lay down mats where I need them, pull the prop, around the tail shaft there is a pressed steel cup, I'm guessing to stop any oil spray, it was a touch loose, so I removed it, this revealed the tail shaft actually sticks out 25mm beyond the lip seal, Mmmmmm------- I have an Idea, out come the 18" pipe piers, check check and double check its in neutral, back under the van, Got where I'm going yet. attach the pump pliers carefully to the tailshaft, pull down on the pliers and I get a partial heavy turn, far too heavy, I'm turning the engine over too, check the lever is in neutral again, and it is, get back under the car, pipe pliers attached again and using a real techie term, wanked back and fro, still turning the engine over, then BANG, it releases, my knuckles punch the bottom of the car, now the shaft turns dead easy, the gears seem to select, all I can think is a synchro cone had jammed, Now I have refitted the prop, and still need to clearance the tunnel slightly, but everything now turns over without going "clunk" Yippieeeeeeee Road trips, Pony Express.... all good stuff to keep us sane, if bleeding. Great outcome.

Back again, had an afternoon out on the Van, been doing loads of silly bits. Many months ago I located the battery in the false floor below the load floor, its quite low, and I managed to find a low Gel Battery that fitted in the space, great, took the battery out a few months ago and put it on the bench, 30 seconds later, it was laying broken on the floor, big hairy gonads, or words to that effect, ok, I will order one, sorry, thats obsolete, days of trying drew a blank, so typical of my luck at the moment I was Gifted a pair of Batteries by the lovely Mr Bravo, which happily fitted in a old box I was going to use for another job, now located on the floor hiding the battery. The floors in these vans are built with bolt in floors, a bit crappy really, but thats what it came with, and its only half length, it dosent go past the middle of the wheel arches, the rest is ply. the steel floor was pretty dented and distorted, I was fortunate to find another straight abiet Rusty, and disposed of the old one when I moved, made a new ply one for the front end, and Hated it, not sure what to do with this, so it has been left in the van for ages, Imagine my surprise when I found the old steel floor, ... in my new Garage. ? Plan B, chopped the trailing edge of the old floor and dropped it over the other floor where the ply would have been, Think this plan is a go'er, I do much prefer the the all metal floor.

Not sure what's going on with me, Normally, as soon as it gets cold, I go and hibernate, at the moment I'm out there 8 hours a day, revisiting lots of things I have already done, but not quite happy with, hence the remodelling of the the load floor, another one thats been bugging me is my ECU, my preference is to mount it in the cab, and using MIl spec 20 pin plug and socket bulkhead mounted, I originally bought a MIL spec plug, found the plug I had acquired from EBAY made the loom to fit, went back to fit the plug, and the pins were falling apart as soon as the crimp pliers were used, got to be a knock off, Souriau is generally spot on kit, new plug and socket ordered, So, I'm now looking for something else to play with, as I'm in a wiring mood. I thought I would re check the new battery wiring, and turn the engine over, the engine is a bit of a mystery to be, I bought it as rebuilt and run , but found a shed load of end float in the crank, fitted new thrust washers, and its seemed OK, crank and rod bearings were good too, but never run it, I spent ages cleaning out the spark plug holes before actually removing the plugs, , the holes were full of crud, once done,I pulled the plugs, WD 40 down the bores, needed to make up a capillary pipe for the Oil Gauge, bit fiddly, as I had to un braze the nipple off the old pipe, and fit to the new pipe., its a pain to fit the block as its behind the exhaust down pipe, all done, I crank over the engine sans plugs, hoping for oil pressure, after 30 secs the cranking speed drops slightly and a dribble comes out the end of the pipe, screw the gauge on and I have got 75lbs of pressure at cranking speed, YIPPIEE I'm not complaining at that, its going to be hight as I have 20/50 in the engine, it should be 10/40,

ell I appear to have sorted my camera woes, and can now appear to post pictures, After my attempt ro re kindle my wiring attempt (Yes Twice) ECU and failing because of inferior plugage from EBAY, Chinese Knockoffs I'm guessing, I went and bought a Used Deutsch 19 pin M & F plug/socket, couriered via the super unreliable Mr Hermes system of 3 days turning into 6days, the kit turned up, now I have used these pre used type of plug many times with success, de pin, and fit new pins, works well as a cheap system of using good quality plugs that don't fail, even have tiny holes drilled in them so, If needed, I can wire lock all the bits so they don't come apart, The only downside of this plug, which I have never come across before from this seller, is the wires a sealed with a rubber compound, I'm not sure if I should dig its out or should I solder tail onto the existing wire, I'm not a lover of soldering wires as the solder can cause hard spike fractures in the wires

Today has been productive, I needed to fit a power switch and 300A mega fuse in the main supply for the car, not the easiest of places to fit adjacent to the battery They were all mounted under the floor untilI had my battery incident, I have made a small box that fits right in the rear corner, this made a strong suitable mount for the switch and fuse, I will mount a fuse and relay for the fuel pump in there too, accessible via a small door should I need to change either fuse or relay, linking the main switch to the Mega Fuse was going to be a problem as they were very close together, too close to crimp a cable together, rummaging thru the box of oleshite turned up a old bus bar from a switch room we dismantled 50 x 6 copper bar was cut up to make a link, at least I know I wont melt this

I'm still busy trying to get the thing ready to start, and rummaginging around looking for wee jobs that will need doing, never sure I had mounted the crank trigger correctly I thought I would check and take the belt cover off that I had cast to replace the poxyflimsy plastic thing, quite happy with my mounting, I was, however a little disapointed with the quality of the casting, it was done locally supposedly in heat treated LM25, which it aint, I would guess its old remelts... it is not good, rough as fook and full of porosity, That was the quality of finish I was left with in a few places and even after much grinding and sanding the porosity is still evident. even more grinding, more grinding more sanding and more sanding I have ended up with this the holes are for access to the cam gear verniers, I wasn't going to bother with verniers but something made me check the cams the other day, especially as the engine came with side draughts fitted, and..... the cams are some sort of high lift jobbies, about 40tho more than stock, so fast road at a guess. and my verniers turned up the other day...... Another thought, suggestions for finishing the belt cover, half tempted to machine turn the sides and the high bits of the front, any other thoughts, the finish at the moment is 120grit DA sanding

I finally got around to trial fitting the front suspension, its going to be tight around the arch lip, So, not being a a lover of rolling lips, and the arch not being round, but oval, do not lend themselves to using rollers. so, 10 mins with a grinder, cleaning and cutting the lip back, a length of 3mm gas welding filler wire, a deft bit of closing with grips and some dolly work resulted in this, I had to go back to the days of my apprenticeship, I should have gone bigger than 2.5 x 3mm lip for the roll over, so its a bit less rolled than I would have liked, but the wire is secure, a bead of sikkaflex, will, I am sure seal and possibly stiffen too, next time I will go with a 10mm lip before rolling, I forgot to add the thickness of the rolled metal in the formula,

Today has been eventful, I suppose todays question has to be, "HOW LOW IS TOO LOW?" after many weeks of fettling bits and bobs, the time came to put it on the floor, its been airbourne for too long, I think when I cant get a low profile scissor jack from under the car, I may just have found its low limit, I sometimes run my shoed toe along a sill and measure by feel, Mmmm toe dosent go past the jacking point either, after clearing what seems like several tool boxes of tools, discarded nuts, bolts and washers, and I must admit a fair amount of detritus, I pushed the van towards and out the door, with accompanying scraping noises when the front wheels dropped down the the 25mm threshold , then went easily, stood back and admired my handiwork, I must admit, it looks the Spaniels Spuds sitting out there in the sun, time to push it back, fec that was a mission , the gentle scraping was in fact the exhaust clamp dropping down the step to a point of no return, took me and 3 neighbours a but of heaving to get it back into its home, time to spin the exhaust clamp and look for some flat band type, and make the spring perch spacers a little smaller..... thats a piece of 60mm timber in front of the jacking point

Today has been a bit of a bitza day (how did I end up cutting the grass? ) But I did manage to get a look at the N/S front suspension, something in my mind did not add up as to why it was lower on one side and not the other, all revealed its self when I jacked up the front, I had the wrong set of pan spacers in there, I had 30mm in there, its now 18mm and it sits a touch better, I know its going to be an up and down adventure while the springs settle, then its off to the Barbers....... I was looking a bit like a cross between Grizzly Adams and Chewbacca, came home, and faffed about reassembling the front upright, put the van on the floor and pushed it outside just to prove to the doubters it has a front end.

That looks rather wonderful Ian. P. Paul, you would not believe the amount of faffing about to get the wheel fit about where I like it, I still need to adjust my rear spacers, its very tight, I have 4mm spacers on the back and I can shave a bit off before I start touching the rear leaf spring, about 2mm I think
