I've been looking at early 98/99 Porsche 996's. I used to have a late model 3.6 996 and sold it due to lack of use but have noticed prices bottoming out and increasing slightly.
With spring around the corner I've been looking at cabs, but wanting something original and standard as possible.
Does anyone have a 3.4 currently or had experiences of one?
Interested to know the good bad and ugly of earlier cars.

ims, bore score, rms... those are the only things that really cause concern. cracked heads and oval pistons are a 3.4 issue too i believe.
ims bearing failure kills your engine and gives no warning. although it happens to a low percentage of cars but still happens. high milers are less at risk, if it would have happened, it would have happened within 60k miles apparently..
borescore can be checked when buying with a test done by an independent for under £100. good maintenance and some thermostat/3rd rad mods help stop the problem happening.
rms is not so serious but a fairly big job, just needs an eye kept on it.
i'm on the look out for a 996 too but a c4s, been doing a lot of reading lately.
theres a uk 911 forum which is good for some reading and pelican parts has a wealth of diy fixing info.

I would love to chime in with something helpful but the above post seems to have covered most of, if not all of the main points.
I have longed for one for years, and one day I am sure I will get one, or perhaps the 997 when they bottom out. It is speculated that the 996 prices have dropped so much due to the reasons listed above, it's enough to scare a lot of people away.
I have personally known 2 people who have owned the 3.4 996, another with a 3.8 997. The 996 both suffered with IMS and the 997 suffered from bore score. Luckily the 997 was under warranty and was refunded.
If you go on the 911 forum there is a huge amount of info in regards to the problems, failure rates, repair options and so on. I do believe that you can still buy complete 3.6 bottom ends from Porsche for around £3,500, which is cheap when you hear of 10k rebuilds. Hartec I think it is offer a service plan that covers the costs of the worst is to happen.
I found 2 early last year and had a specialist go out to the dealers garages and perform a pre-purchase inspection, a 3rd refused to let me have it inspected. The costs for the inspection was not cheap, but the problems he picked up could have potentially saved me thousands.
I hate to send people to other forums but 911uk is full of helpful chaps with years of knowledge. I don't think I've ever posted on the forum, all the answers are already there.
If you get one keep us in the loop, one of my weak points is a 911!
