This is my stepdad's 1976 Mini, which he has built over the last couple of years. I think you might like it... Nice BRG paint job, fat Ultralites. So far, so what, you may say. But that bonnet looks a little unusual. I wonder what's under there? Is that a 1310cc A+, with a BMW 16v twin-cam head? Why, yes it is! And what's that big air filter connected into? Oh, that? That's just a Rotrex supercharger It develops about 200bhp at the flywheel and will apparently do about 130mph (not that he's tried it that far yet). I'm trying to get him to sign up to tell you all a bit more, but without success so far!

I always wanted to do one of those head conversions, but I priced it up recently and they aren't cheap! Looks well done that!

This is what's hiding behind the grille: I do have some video of it running, but the microphone on my phone is diabolical

It was running a 1380 with two twin-choke carbs (I don't know what sort) but apparently, with the boring out needed to take it up to 1380, the wall between cylinders two & three is too thin to handle the power from the blower. So that engine is going in the next project, a Clubman which was going to have a two-litre Vauxhall SRi 130 lump!

Looks lovely!
Colour scheme reminds of the one-off KAD 16V Rover build in the late nineties.

Yep, that's my mini. I love it. the engine was built by Specialist components in Norfolk. As indicated, not cheap but I've got to that time in life If I didn't do it I never would

That is absolutely fantastic. What's traction like with that power? Lsd? ? I must admit not see a 16v head conversion as not read into minis that much What's involved ?

There is no LSD and traction is fine, as long as you don't go daft, as it will easily spin the 13 x 7 low profiles. The engine is very tractable and power delivery is smooth. Get to about 4,000RPM and you get pushed back in the seat and the speedo goes mad. Cylider head is from a BMW K1100 motorbike. This one has been fitted with bigger injectors than the 1380 that was in it.
The engineering is beyond my capablities but I know the original 1275 block was bored offset to 1310. The crank was wedged and bladed (loses about 500g)and heat treated. The crank wasbalanced with the pistons and rods on. The pistons each have 4 pockets machined in them so the valves clear. The only problem I have at the moment is engine temp. The new alloy racing radiator is a bit too efficient and I can't get above 65 degrees in this weather but should be fine in summer.
