Remember that 1996 bubble shaped Rover 214 I bought as salvage and repaired (cant remember if I mentioned it on here or not), well its immobilised itself and I cant turn the damn thing off. Ive tried the key access code and while that turns the alarm off it wont disarm the immobiliser. The guy at the local Rover speialist says it looks like its some kind of hardware failure such as a dodgy loom or ECU fault. I'm guessing the bill for repairing such a fault will be so monsterous that it will send poor 214 (back) to the scrapyard.
Has anyone on here had any experience with such faults. Guy at work told me his mate had one and "the AA couldnt fix it, nobody could. In the end he just scrapped it" not the kind of thing I want to hear.
Help.

Colleague has an MG ZR and the immobiliser started doing strange things - traced back to a load of strafed/shorted wires on the tailgate, but cost him nearly £500 for new ECU, fitting, re-coding, etc.
Sorry...

The guy at the garage asked me to check the rear wiper to see if it worked, said that there was sometimes a problem with the loom there so what you said makes sense. £500............Thats alot of money. Fecking rover.

I know you said you have entered the 4 digit code but have you tried reprogramming the remote. I have had them do that before and been able to do it that way.
Other than that there are a few places that will take the immobiliser circuit from the main ecu (normally around £150)

had a quick look on my autodata cd and it shows a fuse that supplies a feed to a relay that goes to the alarm/immobiliser module, I would presume if the fuse it went it would cause the immobiliser to be on all the time otherwise you would only need to pull this to disarm it. Might be worth checking the fuse and the relay.
Doest say the location of either but fuse is 10A and labelled F20, relay is in a block of 4 and labelled K4

ECU faults are very common on the '2' series Rovers, usually manifesting in immobiliser failure or fuel injection failure. If none of the other suggestions work it may well be worth while having the ecu checked.

Something similar happened on my missus 214.Ended up picking up a 2nd hand ecu (engine bay), immobiliser box ( by stearing column under dash) and key as they are matched. Cost about £40 from a breaker in Yate, near bristol. Apparently the 3 items can be recoded for around £80.

hi done the same as gravelrash before its easy to do the imobilizer/central locking unit is on the drivers side up behind the clocks and is easly axcessed by removing the lower dash panel on that side, i also removed the imobilizer from my rover 820 loom for my turbo project, it was easy on that it just cuts the earth to the switching side of the starter and fuel pump relay. on the 820 re earthed them and it goes. ive been told the later ones are more complex but it might be just the ignition relay also?? Take it there isn't an aftermarket immobiliser fitted? Our "Bubble" 400 developed strange starting tendencies and it turned out to be a really badly fitted immobiliser. Got a wiring guru friend to rip it out!
Is it turning over or just refusing to do anything?

Its refusing to do anything, Just a click of a relay from behind the glovebox and from hehind the speedo area when I turn the key. Ive heard from some people that you can remove a relay or a fuse to disable the immobiliser but ive heard from others theres no way around it at all apart from just fixing it. There isnt an aftermarket immobiliser, just the stock Rover one.
Ive asked about on the unofficial Austin Rover web resource and were all kinda stumped! It would be ideal to just disable the immobilser unit and thow it into the sea to prevent further immobilser sagas. Anyone got the number of the place that bypasses the immobiliser in the ECU?

I`ve had quite a few through here that have their immobilisers handily bypassed.
The only one I had to ebay off for £F*ck all was a rusty M-reg one that I couldnt really be bothered with, but that one was turning over, just not firing, and it was definately the ECU with that car, and the proceedure sounded a right load of old stress and grief, but in your case it`s the immobiliser, that does not mean the ECU needs changing so don't give up, its 99% certain it can be sorted in some way for not a lot of cash. You really need a good auto electrician to come out and plug his box of tricks into it, that`ll save a lot of messing about.
Have faith, I have never been stumped by a Rover immobiliser yet, I just cant remember how the guy that used to come out to them got round them, but he always did (Its been a while since I`ve had any immob. trouble with a Rover. Sh*t, shouldnt have said that, I`ve got a 45, 2 216s and 2 600s out there as we type. Plenty of scope for some fruitless fob-pressing action there!

Ha ha... Bet you cant sleep at night!
I don't think I mentioned this but the car still locks and unlocks fine with the keyfob. Everythings great until I try to start. When I used the key access code I tried to start the engine there was a funny bleeping noise from the dash.
Go back to points and a condensor, thats what I say!
