I think an important distinction should be made between buying a bad car, and a bad example of a good car. In my opinion the P38 is fundamentally far from being a bad car. If you buy a bad Micra there's only so much that can go wrong, but a P38 is a complex beast with the potential to throw big bills at you - buy wisely, and bear in mind how cheap these are to purchase. PS. Do it! This sums it up well, get a good one and look after it and you'll enjoy owning it. The problem with P38's now is there are a lot of cheap examples which are nothing going but buying into someone else's problems. The number of spares or repairs examples with stupid body kits/lights and pimp my ride wheels you see advertised is proof of that. These ones are bought cheap as status symbols, and disposed of as a load of curse word having been run with zero maintenance and a growing list of faults the owners couldn't afford to sort until a terminal failure that means they need to buy the Mondeo they should have started off with. The last of line ones (2002/03 vintage) seem to have been the best, people don't seem particularly keen to sell them on anyways... Anyways, air sprung and auto is the best way to enjoy them, and properly looked after you'll struggle to find a better car for the money. Swopping the 3 litre M57 into a diesel in place of the standard fit M51 is also a worthwhile consideration. Wiring looms to link them into the car and keep everything happy are available, whilst the M57 will bolt straight in where the M51 comes out. An upgraded torque converter with a bigger lockup clutch would be a good idea on an auto though. It's something I've considered myself, but I can't really justify one and keeping my 110.

A mate picked up a cheap 4.6HSE last year. He's replaced the air bags and pump and it's been a great beast. When looking underneath he discovered it has a full length stainless exhaust (manifolds and system) which alone is worth more than he paid for the whole car. He's happy, and his wife loves it!

I've just been looking at these LR specific diagnostics tools (Lynx & Nanocom), they're not cheap! I know they'll pay for themselves but I'm hoping not to need them often enough for them to 'pay for themselves'... Ah yes, I'm afraid I forget you guys have someone with appropriate kit on every street corner. I don't have that luxury, but the weather's better!

Cannot comment on range rover specifics, but one will always have road presence, but I can give you a tale of running a luxury barge for peanuts, many years ago, I knew of a factory cleaner who ran jags, he explained that since his only mileage was a 2 mile shopping trip once a week and maybe 2/300 miles for a holiday, running costs,.fuel, tyres, servicing etc were pennies the only big? Costs were tax and insurance, back then all vehicles cost the same to tax so that made no difference and insurance wasn't bad, given his age and limited mileage. So go for it, if it isn't right, sell on and look for another toy. You will never know unless you try Ttfn Glenn

So I looked at a P38 DSEthis weekend which had very limited description, still in for a penny in for a pound. It was a rough old barge or the money (£2700) but had recently had a top end rebuild, water pump and starter motor.
It was leisurely to say the least and was running on coils which lost part of the charm, what it did do was set a benchmark of what to look for and compare a petrol to. I'm hoping to look at a 4.0 litre later in the week, not found a 4.6 I like yet!

Glenn, you are absolutely right and that is the approach I am adopting. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) georgeb, good point well presented, I'll put out the feelers to see if there is anyone local with suitable kit. s2000, please let me know how you get on, though your budget is quite a bit higher than mine.

Not too far from Swindon, in fact my brother lives there. I shall check him out, in fact I think I spoke to him in the past on RangeRover.net when I was previously looking into getting one.

I bought this 1 last year, and it's coming up for sale soon retrorides.proboards.com/thread/178627/1997-range-rover-dse-hants?page=1&scrollTo=2076804Propshaft noise turned out to be the transfer box chain stretched and slipping Used box has gone in and all is good It also had an Abs issue when I bought it,new pressure accumulator fitted All engine filters and fluids have been changed,as have the injector leak-off pipes It's been used as my daily drive and is just about to hit 180k. Been completely reliable and i'd be happy to drive it anywhere Has its niggles but then it's a cheap, decent P38 In N Shropshire if you are interested?

I would be interested if I had the money, got to clear some other vehicles to raise funds. I was leaning towards a V8 but yours certainly looks tidy in those photos. How soon are you looking to sell? How much would you want for it? What are the niggles? Does the air suspension all work correctly? Any particular reason for sale?
Cheers.

Not in any rush to sell, the only reason is I'm running out of space having bought a low mileage Rover 214 All the air suspension works well, rising and falling on the switch with no delay.Lowers itself at 50mph automatically then pumps back up when you slow down Main niggle is the headlining has dropped, something these are known for.It either needs the cloth replacing,or the remainder of the glue/foam peeling off and the baseboard painting. N/S front locking doesnt work but all the others work off the key.Keyfob was knackered when I bought it but works fine Only other thing is the air intake filter for the heater has failed, allowing rain to sometimes get into the heater intake. It then either drips out of the pollen filters,or gets warmed by the heater and mists the windscreen till its gone I have new filters here to fit,but work and weather are against me at the mo.... MOT till July I'd be happy with £1k for it as it stands. It's in fairly decent condition but needs a bit of tlc

If you're near Swindon I'd highly recommend Swindon 4x4, I've been using them all the time I've had Land Rovers 15 years plus. Always do a good job at a fair price and don't do unnecessary work.

You mention the NS front lock doesn't work, is that just on the central locking? (i.e. Can it be locked with the key or can the vehicle not be secured?). Price sound reasonable, if you still have it when the time comes I'll be in touch. You're s but if a distance away but depending on timing I may ge able to combine a trip up with work.

I got to drive a 4.0SE at lunchtime today. Someone at work has one and he kindly let me have a look around and a drive. It has been converted to coils but still drove nicely and is a comfortable place to be. He loves his but he has warned me to be wary of any issues regarding the key-fob as the immobiliser and security system on these things is rather sensitive and anything it doesn't like will result in it locking you out with a dead engine. His has played up a couple of times and he always keeps a new fob battery on him as a precaution too.

I have a P38 I paid £500 for it with a knackered 4.0 engine I swopped it for a good 4.6 and converted it back to air from coils It's no minter but it drives nice it's only a spare car and I use it for towing and light off roading "just a bit of fun" I had a top spec disco 2 V8 before and I liked that much more and it was much more capable off road than the rangy Potentially the p38 has loads of problems but mine sits for 6 months at a time without use and I just connect the battery and turn the key and off it goes The V8 can be troublesome but they are so simple to fix the rest of the problems are electronic and there's a couple of Land Rover based forums that will point you in the right direction Never been a fan of LPG and I've seen lots of rover V8s with LPG that have engine issues so I'd avoid LPG "but that's up to you" Good luck and enjoy
