After looking at this thread- retrorides.proboards.com/thread/185325/visionalert-aa-60-series, and another I can't find with a Federal Signal "Aerodynic" lightbar (think Sheriff Roscoe in Dukes of Hazzard) I decided I needed a flashing light. After a tiny bit of research (looking at flashing light videos on youtube) Mrs Generallee found this for me, badly listed on American ebay. Now I need a flashing light like a hole in the head, so naturally I stuck a bid in. And won. So I am now the proud owner of a fantastically named "Federal Signal Beacon Ray twin" So I took it to bits to give it a clean The dome has some scratches on it. I'll try some caravan window polish on it. I might keep an eye on ebay to see if a red one comes up cheap. Mechanism looks in good shape, with plenty of life left in the brushes. There is a gear on the bottom, presumably you can mount it on a bar with another and synchronise them with a chain. Or something. Dunno. Cleaned and back together. I need to make a rubber seal to sit under the dome as its a bit wobbly and rattly. Then sort out a 12 volt supply and try it out.

Federal Signal Aerodynics are mega bucks. That twin-ray is ace. You can use 1000-1500-2000 wet and dry then car polishing compound on the plastics to get the marks at least subdued and the cover sparkling. I imagine they were synchronise-able as they used these on sherrif's cars and such and Federal Signal LOVE being able to synchronise the rotating parts, don't know if you had the chance to see one before up close but most Aerodynics ran the rotators off a single motor and gears. Mega cool. Mate had one on a VW Santana but it was devoid of its rotators, it had been fitted out with 6 alley lights as wig-wags. I'll see if I can dig up a pic..

Hi, My guess would be that is a 'master' and the gear on the bottom is to drive a 'slave' the other end of the bar.

Good call on the wet and dry, I'll give it a go, thanks. That Aerodynic looks ace. And massive!
I think you are right about driving a 'slave', like this-
Although Mrs Generallee would go mad of I started buying more, and bits of old roof rack and loud halers to cobble one together.

I imagine the bar itself is a proper Federal Signal thing incorporating the drive. Cool thing if you have a 70's plymouth I guess

Haven't touched this for ages. I put 12v through it and it lit up but wouldn't rotate. Knowing next to nothing about electricity I cracked the motor open and cleaned the brushes and commutators. Didn't really have anything to clean it with. Way back my dad used to use methalated spirits to clean the rails of his train sets, but I didn't have any so used vodka. It sort of worked a bit. Mrs Generallee cleaned the gubbins inside so it's spotless. I "cleaned" it before using my usual method of wiping it with an oily rag. I had a little go at yhe dome with some wet n dry as described above but didn't go to town. I will do though. Hot wired it up to a battery and it lives! Hurrah! Plonked on the top of my pick up, it's a bit too big I think.

Glad to see you got it spinning anything with a bit of spirit in is ok for cleaning the commutator. Had similar with the heater blower in my E28, removed the brushes and sprayed the commutator up with brake cleaner and just generally de-guffed it.

I don't know where the time goes... The old Beacon Ray is still doing sterling service, warning people in the living room that the sideboard is stationary. I switch it on from time to time, it brings me joy. So, I was browsing on eBay, and this popped up. I stuck it in my watch list, it was cheap. I don't need it. Couple of weeks later, I messaged the seller. And bought it... It's a Premier Hazard "Optimax" I washed a few quid into it, and it came up well. The lenses dried a bit cloudy, but not bad at all. I couldn't resist taking it apart and cleaning it. It's really nicely made, in Leeds, and very 'modular' so loads of configurations are possible. The mirrors are set up to throw maximum light one way, usually to the rear. This one is back to front, the red lens in the middle needs turning round. I tried some 2000 grit on the middle section, it's much better but still yellowed. (Only the patch on the top left done) Put it back together, all the rubber gaskets were nice and soft still The little bag has fitting instructions in it, and some spare clips and hardware in case bits get broken or lost. Class. And cobbled it onto the car Long term plan is to add some wigwags, and maybe mess about with the mirrors a bit. I'd really like to build an 'Aerodynicalike', I might try wiring the motors in series to slow them down, but they might be too slow then. Whatever, it will be a garage ornament for the foreseeable as we just bought a house which needs doing up, and I don't really need a light bar on any of my vehicles 😀

Oh, I should add, lenses are still available for these... In blue and red! I really cant justify the expense though (they would cost more than I paid for the unit)
And then I'd need something to put it on. I'll think about it.
