I wasn`t sure I was going to like it but thought it was excellent in the end. A sad indictment of our motor industry.

Nice, a bit rambling and didn't tell us anything new, but James May makes it all so easy to watch.
I want a Dolly sprint.

That was an excellent watch. Looked at all the angles, political, economic, socialogic etc.
I totally enjoyed it, and it brought back good memories. My parents had a 1300 Allegro CXD 589M and hated it so much they bought a bronze 1500 later on in life TVP 455S. I think, just to hate something again....
The Allegro designer Harris Mann was interesting, what he designed compared to what BL produced... He seemed a good sport.

I thought it was pretty good, some lovely cars, the guys talking about the demise of Detroit were interesting and the tongue in cheek comment about the end of Top Gear made me chuckle. I quite like James May as a presenter and am looking forward to the rest of the new series.

Currently driving a '68 Karmann Ghia as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

He seemed a good sport. Stu It was a good program, as you say. Did BL really cock up the Allegro from Harris Mann's original design just to save making a new heater? I can believe it. Loved his reaction (even if it was scripted) when James offered a lift in the Allegro - "No thanks, I'd rather walk" The difference between the ways things worked in the US and Japan was interesting too in the 1 US gallon section. That Celica was just beautiful; my OH was amazed when I said I'd rather have the 260Z than the Mk 3 E-Type too.

I enjoyed the show although as said alot of it was already known. It however was a better representation of the situation from what I have read elsewhere. That Celica was just beautiful; my OH was amazed when I said I'd rather have the 260Z than the Mk 3 E-Type too. I believe it was the heater and engine combo which basically caused the car to be far larger than it was. But, I guess there was an element of 'we'll bodge it and see what happens. I mean, I am sure the weaknesses of some BL cars can be discussed at length (Triumph's angular head studs, the 1500 Triumph engine which was stroked beyond what was truly viable and the Maxi's curse word cable change). But there was also so much potential which makes things worse However, this is the company who thought they could carry a door design through several modesl for several years as below: The 60s: The late 60s: The 70s: I don't know why they are called the AD017 doors. They should be called the Doors of Doom! They haunted the Austin 3 Litre design where many thought it was basically a slightly larger Landcrab and the Maxi where the doors simply dated the cars when fresher styling was around. Only the bean counters of BL could do this. I guess it goes to show that a good engine and good suspension will only get you so far. To quote the Guardian about the 3 litre in the 70s:

I enjoyed it. Rather sad to see how the British motor trade had been wiped out, and interesting how the comparison was done with other countries. I find him an interesting presenter and enjoy his programmes.
I still like the allegro though! Don't want one, but it does always make me smile.

If the Allegro looked how Harris Mann envisaged it, I might have wanted one! Someone must have thought it looked good though, cos the mkIII Astra copied it 10 years later! Of all the British and American cars shown in that program, only the Dolly Sprint came out a winner, and quite justifiably so too! When it came out, the motoring media viewed it favourably against the then contemporary 2002Ti Steve Not that I am in any way biased towards the Dolomite!

For those that want to know (a lot) more about the Allegro development story—there's loads more info about it on the ever-excellent AROnline site: www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/cars/austin/allegro/the-cars-austin-allegro-development-history/www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/concepts/concepts-and-prototypes/concepts-and-prototypes-austin-allegro/I often use that same image of 'intended vs. actual' Allegro styling to show to colleagues when design projects at work go south.. I too enjoyed it - May is a proper presenter and seems to care about accuracy over sensationalism. Loved the contrast of the Dolly Sprint interior alongside the E21 - worlds apart.. And the Detroit guy admitting that all the big three cars were never reliable. My one gripe would be the often glossed over problems at BL - yes - the unions were at their strongest and most militant, but a lot of the problems stemmed from terrible managers messing up the supply chain and sending workers home all the time because they didn't have the parts to actually build the cars.
