Hi folks, first post on here having dipped in quite a bit over last couple of years to look at the great projects and work you guys and girls are carrying out ! Really impressed with the skills, enthusiasm and commitment that goes into your vehicles. Thought enough being lazy, i'd better sign up and start a project thread for my SD1 1982 3500 SE manual. Not a massive resto or mod job but might be of interest so here goes ! Got the car in June '15 and it's a 1982 built "run out" model of the SD1 series 1. These had chrome door mirrors rather than black plastic, new design seats and a few other changes ahead of series 2 spec. SD1's were first introduced back in '76 hence unbelievable 40 yrs since launch ! Series 2 started about April 1982 with a much revised range including Vitesse and 2400 diesel along with the base 2000 model. They continued on until 1986/7 when the 800 range took over.My car had a few extra bits that weren't normal spec, ie the later series 2 front chin spoiler, grille and headlamps. These series 2 items were allegedly fitted from new either at the factory or by the supplying dealer. At first I'd assumed these had just been lashed together at some point in the cars's history. History wise the car was first registered on 8th April 1982 by Arnold G Wilson, Regent Street, Leeds. It was allocated to BL cars MCP department ( management car programme) for their bosses to cruise around in for its first year ! On 10th March 1983 the car was registered to a Mr Fellows of Billingham. It remained under his ownership for twenty eight years until March 2011 where Mr Spendlove of Wolverhampton sourced the car via two guys who had acquired the car, got it back on the road having found it to be a great runner despite some years unused. The car was dry stored for at least twelve years of its life leading up to 2011. Structure wise it certainly seems largely rot free hence this would tend to tie in with long term storage having taken place ! Enough blah and history lessons for now, time for some photos of what she was like when acquired last summer........ ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/rover201.jpg)
Front end end looking a bit awkward with the later headlamps, spoiler and grille lashed on ! Otherwise thought it looked smart especially in white. ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/sd1%20side.jpg) Side view looks a bit better although sills should be black rather than body colour. ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/rover%202_1.jpg) Again not bad but a few detail changes needed. Sports exhaust sounds nice though ! ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/rover%208.jpg) 80's crushed velour trim ! CD player and that steering wheel & cover were amongst the first things to go ! ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/rover%2010.jpg) The engine room ! Twin SU's with K&N's, also running a points ignition system having been converted because of problems with the troublesome electronic units that were standard fit. Needs tidying and a few changes but not a bad start and most importantly the motor seems strong and pulls well. That's an overview of the car and an idea of what I'd bought. Drive home from Wolverhampton back to Yorkshire on a sunny June day was great. Decent oil pressure, charge rate and no dramas on the temp gauge were all positives ! So not a concourse show car and anything exotic but fits in with exactly what I was after, a lot of fun and nostalgia without laying out a fortune. It's amazing how much the SD1 turns heads these days, suppose you just don't see them around anymore with most having succumbed to the dreaded tin worm ! Any thoughts and feedback appreciated.....Updates to follow ! Cheers ! Dave.

SD1 is one of my all time faves proper British muscle car. Looks as though yours is a good one although you're right the front end looks slightly odd! I think from what I've read there's excellent spares availability on these. Anyway have fun and enjoy that good old V8 noise! Dave

That's gorgeous. You are right about SD1's turning heads, seen a light blue Vitesse in my town a while ago, made me stop in my tracks (was walking home from work) and stare as it burbled past, since then two people have mentioned they have seen it

Very nice, always fancied an SD1 and this one looks a minter. Saw a Rover engine a few months ago on some forum or other with two sets of bike carbs stuck up vertically and it looked awesome.

Moving the story on, I quickly sourced and fitted a North American spec steering wheel. The original "quartic" style wheel wasn't very nice to drive with and it seemed to weigh a ton when I handled it to remove ! Kept hold of it of course so it can be put back to original spec. Got a recolouring kit at the NEC show last November just need to pop the wheel off when I get chance and feel like messing about.
![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/NAS%20wheel.jpg) I'd been toying with the idea of a wheel upgrade from day 1. Wasn't seeking to create a Vitesse look-alike or go too modern hence a set of Minilite replicas quickly became favourite. Some research was done and a phone call made to the very knowledgeable Dave at R&R Alloys - www.RandR-Alloys.co.uk A set of Minilite replicas were available in 5.5x 15 with 5x127 PCD. The offset of 15 initially worried me (standard SD1 wheels have offset of ET 40 I believe) as did the dimension of the centre bore. However all was clarified, then this happened : Set of 4 Mililite replicas from R & R with Yokahama A Drive tyres fitted and balanced. Chromed wheel nuts and centre caps thrown in. Some negotiation bagged a great deal. Delivered to the door without any hassle or damage. ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/minilites%20.jpg) I removed the original alloys (which I'll refurbish and store for any future requirement) cleaned the hub surfaces and applied a thin film of Copaslip. New wheels fitted with the new nuts supplied and torqued up. Was really pleased with the fit and appearance : ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/rover3500se%20side.jpg) ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/rover%203500se%20wheel.jpg) I'm trying to get hold of a period RGA (Richard Grant Accessories) or similar tailgate spoiler which is in black rubber and smaller than the Vitesse item which doesn't really suit the series 1 cars IMHO, mainly because of the slightly different tailgate. The one I'm after is similar to those fitted on the Janspeed Turbo cars like the one below : ![](http://i814.photobucket.com/albums/zz63/bigfellaxx/image.jpg1_14.jpg) So if anyone has the heads up on where to get one from I'd be very grateful ! First drive out on those new wheels and boots revealed no imbalance issues. The wheels have achieved exactly to look I was seeking and I think have really lifted the appearance. To me they look better without the chrome effect centre caps so I’ll be leaving them off for now. Only slight issue was the tyres rubbing on the spoiler edge whilst on full lock. Some dremmel work alleviated the issue but the spoiler would be going soon anyway ! Some good runs out were made during summer '15 and I knew I'd made the right initial choice of car. Plenty of room for development though ! Having had time to think about where I was going with the car, I decided that taking it back to series 1 front end spec was the right thing to do. This would involve binning off the front chin spoiler, series 2 headlamps which are different along with the black grille panel. A few more issues were there to sort like the coach lines that were a bit wavy, wrong V8 badges on the wings along with some mechanical stuff........ So I started shopping for the bits I'd need and planning the transformation ! More updates to follow soon........

Wow that looks amazing. The colour looks fantastic (it actually looks like one of those modern Audi A5's don't you think but 30 years ahead of its time!).
The wheels are inspired - they suit the car perfectly.

Glad you're going for the S1 front end. I think it looks so much cleaner. I remember these being launched - I was 14 or 15. This and the 604 were my joint second favourite exec's - winner was the CX.

The wheels are inspired - they suit the car perfectly. Cheers ! Agree on the design. I remember them being launched in '76 when I was a young lad and they were regarded as an amazing car. Nothing else much like them at that time. Snag was that the poor build quality was quickly exposed and they acquired a poor reputation. Can't help but think that if they'd been build to say German standards they would have been an absolute world beater !

Great cars, I love them. The series 2 cars were screwed together pretty well. I had a Vitesse as a daily and it never let me down. Not like my Alfa or my sisters golf lol!

Nice, though I rather like the original alloys, though they're a bit hard to clean, I imagine - didn't some models have these alloys in gold, IIRC?

For a very short time in the 80's I worked at a couple of Austin Rover dealerships. the sd1 V8 was a lovely old boat but really badly put together. The workforce at Solihull couldn't give a fig about quality as they were told to do numbers and the management could see the writing on the wall or more importantly in the finances. The seats used to collapse and the brakes became a bit interesting when you made progress but you can't beat that V8 sound.
Nice car you have there look forward to your subtle period mods.
