any help would be welcomed, last used 1980 hoping too get back on the road this year with mx5 running gear,lowered with deep dish wheels and without the hideous arches and side pipes,at the moment its fitted with a v4 ford lump which is only good as a boat anchor but there u go came fitted with it,i need help fitting the running gear hoping too keep the fuel injection as is, the mx5 is a 1.8 and its running complete car so what do i need too remove off the car too retro fit into my car and keep the costs down,anything i need too buy for instance.

Sounds like a great plan, don't know what you'd need but there are a couple of people on here who've put the MX 5 engine into other cars so a search will throw up an MGB, Herald and a Volvo at the least. Look forward to following your progress.

with retro rides behind me I'm hoping too keep going with this project i bought it a couple of months ago and not started yet,i got too many projects and way too many cool cars i may put some pictures up,i was always into classic cars looking standard and hunted the country for the right parts too make them original,but i went too a retro rides show and just fell in love with classic cars with modern running gear and thats my aim now too go down this route with most of my cars but he xr2 is staying standard,i also got a 70s cutom pop which is staying as it was built in the 70s love it.

Interesting!
Wonder what it looked like in the 'full custom' days? Assuming big & little cragars, jack-up rear and some lairy paint.
Would be great to recreate that, though your plans sound great too.
Hope you've got a decent plan for security.
ALL-CORTINA MEET IS COMING and all that.

security? how come, i was thinking big and small slot mags but deffo big and small something,its still got the jack up kit fitted lol,its coming off i got a 70s custom don't need another, i want it slammed but drivable see how it goes hopinf for some suggestions on the engine conversion before i commit too starting it.

There's an upcoming all cortina "event" taking place, and there might possibly be a very small chance that cortinas are being stolen to possibly be used at that "event"
How about a modern twist on the 70s custom, back then the usual choice was the rover v8, now the Lexus v8 seems to have replaced it, so would that fit your ideas?

i would have loved too have seen it in the 70s,i wonder if it was ever finished,the exhausts r both connected too the v4 engine, it was definately all connected and I'm thinking on the road,all cortina event u mean banger racing event i take it ye, i have this problem with one of my other cars which is a very unusual granada.   |

I can't see too many problems fitting a mx5 engine / box, the biggest issue is usually sump to steering / cross member, I am pretty sure the mx5 is rear sumped which will hit the std cortina drag link, one option would be to go for a escort based rack and pinion set up.
The gear stick may be too far back but these are easily shortened.
Assuming it is an early mx5 the wiring is pretty simple with no security or can system to worry about, its usually
Possible to unwrap the loom and pull all the circuits you don't need just leaving the power ignition and earth connections.
Alternatively, if I remember correctly the 3.0 essex v6 is a straight swap for the V4........

ye u r right i could just drop in a v6 essex,as its allready got a v4 in there but they r heavy and ancient now lol,i do have a v6 24v cossie lump here the boa version which i been thinking about but i don't need 200++ bhp on tap lol.
i believe u r correct with the sump and steering being in the way so will have too look into that with either changing the steering or unless i can cut and reweld the sump somehow butt havent looked into yet,the mx5 is still complete at the moment hoping too get it by the weekend, ye its an early mx5 1.8 its got no power steering,no aircon, no immobilliser too worry about,so that bit should be straight forward hoping too use everything from the mx5 too run it but havent done anything like this before, only like for like stuff, i been enjoying reading all the threads on here with mx5 conversions going on seems contagious.

Its an alloy sump so needs tig welding, but I did hear somewhere that one of the other mazdas uses a forward sump which fits, not sure if that was just the 1.6 though.

Sure my dad fitted side exits to a mk2 Cortina way back in the 70's.. recall seeing one in an old photo album. Think it was either black or dark maroon

cooool car mate like the sound and style your going for. yep a good clean up with brillo pads and a coat of lacquer would look good just get the body ok for mot testing . slammed ohhh yeah big wheels up in the arches . low down and dirty . id have to take off the vinal roof and get a wider axel or deep dish wheels to take up the gap in the rear, to the edge of the car body .loose the tow bar. side exit exhausts look cool but will take up ground clearance if your going to lower it you could do what I did and bring the exhaust into the trans tunnel under the prop. exiting to the rear .I'm a Rover fan so id go that but that's because its an easy lump to use and no messing with wiring. all the best mate and crack on. better weather coming .
