The latest saga found me testing the car and ended up with white smoke billowing out of the back of the car. I thought I'd blown the HG but was very relieved when I found it was just a burst heater pipe. Relief turned to anxiety as the pipe isn't very accessible! Anyway, ordered new pipe from Volvo (£24) and spending half a day fitting it. I found the problem though, this is the pipe I took off. I ripped the pipe in half taking it out by the way. I looked back in the service history and saw this pipe had been replaced recently. So I was confused why it had gone again. I soon found out - the garage who replaced it only fitted half of the new pipe, the easy bit from the heater valve to the bulkhead. They hadn't bothered with the tricky one from the engine block to the valve which is what had split this time. Grrrr! The previous owner had been charged for the full pipe from Volvo - it comes as one pipe which you have to split so they just have just chucked the other half away!! Anyway I also flushed out the header tank which had some copper gunk in it (old coolant residue I think) and filled the system with water a couple of times and flushed it out again a couple of times. Filled with the only coolant I could buy on the day from Halfords (£33 for the 6 litres I needed!) but it all works fine now. ---------- In other news the boost has been increased so my cheapy gauge now shows it boosts to 0.9 bar which is 13psi. Doesn't seem that much faster to be honest but mine is the HPT version so I've probably only added about 30bhp. A roughy 0-60 time was measured around the 8 to 9 second mark - YOWSERS! Also I have a full roof rack to fit which will be done today hopefully - I have a proper Thule system with the now discontinued Thule tray. Euro look ahoy! I have also been given this lot very kindly from a friend: Rokford Fosgate Punch sub in a Classic Acoustics Ltd enclosure and I think a Phoenix Gold qx2100 amp to go with it

That's some top quality old school hi-fi gear! Thanks! Can't wait to put it in.... Quick question - did you go to Hudds Uni about 20 years ago and do Geography? I remember someone who I chatted to a couple of times called Stu (I think) who had a succession of Beetles.

After a long wait I can finally show my new wheels off. Problem with these cars is that the 5x108 bcd isn't common, and the standard 25mm offset isn't either. Lots of people use later FWD Volvo wheels, but they need expensive hubcentric spacers. Or you can get some bigger RWD Volvo wheels but they are many many £££££. I quite fancied 17" wheels but all of the above were going to cost too much, so I did a bit of hunting. Peugeots have 17" steels in their ranges but the offset is quite high as they are FWD wheels. People have moved the centres of the wheels but it all seemed like a lot of faff. I eventually found that the spare wheel from a Citroen C6 was 7x17", cb of 65.1 and et32. Another Volvo 740 owner has used a pair on the front of his car in black and only a 5mm spacer was needed to clear the strut. However they only sold 800 C6's in the UK, so they aren't exactly common in the scrapyard, and the Citroen dealers wha £90+ EACH for them. Sigh. Anyway, after a couple of months searching and buying from some far flung places I managed to get 3 - arrrgghhh! After a longer wait I managed to get the last one reasonably locally but it wasn't in great condition paint wise - I think these spare wheels have curse word paint on them. As bought - car is jacked up so they look a bit lost here, but it was proof they would fit on the rear with no spacers or modifications. So what colour to paint? A friend is a pro designer and did some Photoshops for me. As supplied with the yellow stickers on... (quite like this) All black Silver

I decided that silver would be the best, I was concerned the black wheels might look a bit lost with the grey paint. So went to my usual powder coaters, LSN in castleford and had the whole lot done in a nice neutral silver. Coupled with some new 2015/50r17 tyres via BlackCircles they were ready to go on. I could have gone for smaller tyres but the roads are so bad round here I needed to keep some cushioning! Close up I painted the hubs silver and put some grey wheel bolt covers on which neatened the whole look up (not in pics yet) The pics don't show them very well, they actually have a bit of dish to them which isn't clear in the pics. They do look a lot bigger in real life too! I wish I could drop the suspension a bit more but the roads round here mean its not very practical to do so. ________________ In other news I have stripped a few bits out of a scrap 940 I found locally. New door seals replaced the universal ones I fitted a while back to try and stop a water leak, the new proper Volvo ones fit much better and mean you don't have to slam the door. Got a bulb set, some new windscreen trims and loads of (expensive to buy on their own!) Volvo relays too. And one dash bulb so I can now see my headlight switch properly. I also took the boost gauge out as it wasn't reliable, I don't know why, maybe it was my install or the curse word quality of the gauge but if it wasn't reading the right boost level I couldn't be sure my engine was on a safe boost level so I took it out and the MBC to return it to stock. I'm looking at getting a better boost gauge to put somewhere later on. From the scrap car I got a replacement dash part which brings me back the cig lighter and the cubby hole which I retrimmed in the Alcantara like stuff I did the door cards in. I also fitted a new O2 sensor and engine temp ECU sensor to try and cure the elevated CO levels. I think maybe the cat is worn out so I'll look out for a new one sometime.

Glad I found your thread, good chatting to you at RRG. It was the wheels that made it stand out for me so definitely get my vote and the silver is the best option too. Here's my photo ...

Been renovating a house so not much change. Keeps going, runs so smoothly it's daft. Here's a pic anyway! With the new roof rack on. Got some new door cards to fit which aren't wrinkled But not fitted them.

Nothing else done as restoring a house which the Volvo had become very adept at helping me with. So I treated my Swedish beauty to a good clean and a modelling pic on my new road I'll be living on.

Anyone who has a 940 probably has wrinkled door cards. Apparently the glue they used in the 90's was more eco friendly but after a few years it was found the glue failed in the heat so vinyl on the tops of the door cards creased and wrinkled. It's quite hard to find some door cards where this hasn't happened. The left hand ones on mine were ok but the driver and rear right Ines weren't very pretty. Finally managed to get some for a reasonable price which were in great condition and eventually got round to fitting them. So much better!!

Next up is the MOT. Emissions were a little high last time so I've done quite a few things to help them, cleaned the throttle body etc and now I've removed the injectors and sent them off for cleaning to injectortune.co.uk. The o rings on the bottom of them did feel very hard and they were quite manky where they fitted into the engine side of things. Hopefully this will improve things.
Still need to fit a working horn though!!

Thanks very much! New horns fitted!! Took me 3 hours to do as I am very much a novice when it comes to auto electrics but I think I did a safe install and managed to mount the horns behind the grill so people WILL hear me! Now the horn volume matches the size of the car. Bad picture as it got dark - Hella Sharptones FTW

Annoyingly (and contrary to all plans), I've recently obtained a 940 which needs door cards! Car looks very smart though, good work
