Strewth, that looks like a lot of work! Are you doing it all yourself? I've fancied a mk3 Cortina for a long time, or better still, a Ford Taunus fastback. But to date they have eluded me. I saw this one the other day while I was out and about it looked pretty damn cool, and immediately sparked off an eBay search when I got home lol. Who's is the blue one in the photos, that looks pretty special! The blue one belongs to pete c off YouTube search for Cortina gxl restoration you'll be even more impressed when you see what he started with,it's project swampy you looking for not his project ruby series

i think varajett II suffers a bit of the same stigma as pierburg 2e3, i.e out of a million cars that had them fitted you only heard about the 10,000 with knackered automatic chokes and blocked jets.
persionally, i'd trust a cleaned and set up varajett II more than 40 year old second hand bosch jetronic! cant sniff at the opwer increase and efficiency though

I guess it's a similar thing with the Ford VV carb, everyone will tell you it's rubbish. But they're really not bad. EFI is probably the way I'll go considering it's pretty easy to find it from the Manta.

Nice to see yet another Mk1 Cav getting some love! I've had a few coupes/hatches (including Mantas) but never a saloon - definitely on the list. Bookmarked!

And you said you thought I was a lucky man, you, in my opinion are just as lucky, you have a MKIII Cortina GXL. I had one many years ago and would dearly love another one. The Cavalier looks good too, following the updates with great interest.

So! I finally have it! But for the past couple of weeks I've not had my laptop (SSD failed... again...) so anyway, I commandeered my mum's laptop so I can post some piccies. I've not been able to do much, other than some cleaning and I rebuilt the headlights, as they were pretty manky. Hopefully tomorrow I can source all new ignition parts, and actually get the thing running! I'll have to just dump all the pics, they're pretty self explanatory. Original dealer plate: This is the worst part of the car, this quarter. It's obviously been replaced, but badly, also the rot at the bottom corner of the windscreen. It's going to take some imaginative cutting bending and welding to get this to line up better. My uncle dropped by to have a looksee Underside shots This is the only rot underneath: the chassis legs are mint The headlights done: Actually not sure if I like them being this dark, but as long as they work it's okay. So that's where we're up to. Tomorrow I'll go get plugs, leads, rotor arm, points, condenser and coil. As I've got no spark at all but all the other electrical things work pretty good. I've also got another set of rostyles with decent tyres and centre caps to collect from Sheffield at the weekend

Oh yes ziebart plugs eeeverywhere! I reckon it saved it. I had a mk1 fiesta with ziebart plugs everywhere and the sticker, only it didn't help that one, the rot seemed to start from the holes they drilled. Gonna have to get the sticker for this.
So I changed the points, condenser, plugs and leads today. they sent me a different condenser in the box for the rotor arm, I'll sort that out tomorrow. It sort of fires, but it's not that happy. I also managed to drain the battery trying to pump fuel through from the tank. It's on charge now and if it doesn't start pulling fuel through, it's tank out and all the fuel lines out. which to be fair I was going to do anyway. But we're a step closer!

Not that the vauxhall isn't a nice motor or anything, but for me that's the nuts right there

Oh yeah that's my baby!
So the cav runs, but it won't idle. If I turn the idle screw about 10 or so turns anticlockwise, it sort of idles, albeit very lumpy, but still cuts out. so I'm thinking it might be a combination of a curse word carb and a dicky fuel pump. 10 turns is wayyyyy too much adjustment on a carb to get such little results.

Good to see another MK1 Cavalier getting attention. Whilst it did look grim in the first set of photos the rest shows that it's more than savable. Looking forward to seeing the updates of this........Bookmarked.

So it'll idle, but only when cold. So I'm suspecting the carb is just curse word. I've heard that if they've been messed with they'll never run right again, plus the manufacturer states a clean out once every year! I can only imagine how many times in it's 35 year life that's been done. So I guess I'll whack a webber on it down the road. I did manage to move it today, and as I thought there are no brakes at all. So total rebuild of those is on the cards. Never made brake lines before, it'll be a learning experience I'm sure. But I did get some pics of the other side! It should look good on it's new steels tomorrow, still rostyles but not rotten. I plan to lower it a little too, maybe get the steels banded later on as they're very thin. Look a little silly really. The overall plan is to look something like this: a 'what if' Cavalier SR. not sure on the vinyl roof yet, but we'll see. I'm not even sure if it's staying yellow. It'll never be a brilliant paint job doing it myself but I do like this blue:

So a trip to sheffield this morning to collect 5 more rostyles, and to take advantage of the lovely weather and the beautiful scenery I decided to come home via the snake pass, which was a lot of fun. My gosh the mondeo is a good handling car. Only killed somewhat by hills. How they looked when I collected them. I'd already painted one I didn't waste any time! What a difference good wheels make! I still feel this car somewhat resembles a turtle at the front end from this angle. Need to get myself the lip from the coupe. The rest are all painted and ready to go tomorrow. In other news it still won't idle, so I'm going to take off the fuel pump and have a look at that.
