I'm midway through rebuilding the engine for The SD1 but I can't work out whether the rear crank oil seal I got in my kit is wrong or I'm just not putting it on properly. Any ideas? I can't really see how it would seal anything. The engine is a mid-eighties 'flapper' EFI as found in the SD1 Vitesse and VDP EFI, some Range Rovers and the TVR Wedges. This is the seal that came in the kit: This is how it looks with the 'seal' removed: And this is the other half of the bearing: Cheers!

Not sure what that's for but its not a a rear seal - that should be a conventional lip seal and be half the width of that rubber thing and fit over that polished area of the rear of the crank pushing up to that first recess.
I will say though that I think you have assembled the engine incorrectly - Tits together on the rods and if they are on the rods then you may have the caps wrong.
Cheers

Hi, That is not the rear crank seal, that is used on the carb air filter elbow. For some reason bottom or full gasket sets don't come with the rear seal. You will have to buy it separately, it is a conventional lip seal.

Infact on the last rod I can see the tit on the rod and its the wrong way round and because of that the little end is clearly not centered in the piston - engine will last a few hours like that.

Ah, thanks for the replies guys. If it's something to do with carbs that explains why I couldn't find anywhere else for it to go. I'll have a look for the right part.
