Just before New Year my polo's engine went up in flames, Now I am unable to open the bonnet to properly inspect the damage, I have removed the handle and pulled the cable from inside, I have tried to move the catch from the front and from the inside via the underside, On these cars the catch mechanism is hidden behind a metal panel in the grill, Any tips on this please, I can not get power to the car  |

Sounds silly but when my mk2's bonnet stopped opening, it took a while to realise that the latch was still functioning but the 'popper' spring had fallen out. Get someone to lift the bonnet as you try the cable.

I expect the cable has been cooked. Sorry, don't know the answer to your question - if you can find someone with the same car where the bonnet does open it would probably be worth taking a good look at that for ideas?

My first thought was a can opener. Probably not particularly helpful but good luck with it.

Chances are the bonnet is scrap anyway. Loads in scrapyards to replace, fire up the angle grinder!

Seeing grill is missing I'd have thought it's be a simple case of finding where cable attaches to the latch and pulling that whilst lifting the bonnet.

that bonnet will be rippled to hell with the fire , angle grinder or chisel a hole in it and get it open as it will need replacing anyhow
otherwise a stuff bit of wire and poke around in the grille area with a torch
