As Jonsey said get somebody to press the clutch pedal down and then see if you can move the release arm. If so could be an adjustment problem or release bearing being to 'short' and not having enough movement to fully depress the clutch fingers. Had the release bearing problem in my 56 pickup truck - correctly boxed but incorrect part. Took a little while to work that one out. Hopefully it is just adjustment. P.

so, I am pretty sure its releasing fully as I can actuate it the same distance by hand under the car. I can see a clear space above the friction material when the clutch is actuated. When the pedal is down I can move the friction plate with a screw driver but I am not sure if it is moving up and down the input shaft and coming away from the flywheel. Would it dragging on the flywheel even though I can move it with a screwdriver be enough to cause issues?

Can you turn the engine without moving the wheels when the clutch is depressed?
Do you still have the original pressure plate and is it the same height as the one fitted?

can you change/alter the length of the push rod? yes though its looks like it will make no difference. I can manually actuate the clutch arm until its bottomed out and out of travel.

nope, what i can do is put it in gear and put the brakes and clutch on and listen to it screech and slip the clutch. The more i look and mull over it the more i think the clutch plate isnt moving on the input shaft freely. Thinking back it was a ball ache to get them together. I should of probably looked closer back then.

I had a similar problem when I put my SIMCA 1200S Bertone coupe back on the road. I got it just about separating with maximum adjustment but it was not good, with much gear crunching and runs up Shelsley at RRG18 finished it off, burning the new centre plate out. On stripping it down, I found the NOS 'Verto' clutch pressure plate/cover assembly I'd fitted was faulty. Half way round the main face it was purple from severe overheating, the rest OK. The 'fingers' were uneven... It was obvious it had not been releasing evenly with one side staying in contact with the centre plate. On taking the engine out and finding the above. I fitted a new centre plate and the car's original cover assembly which I hoped still had life in it... result!!! works spot on and still does 2 years and loads of 'hammer' later. I wasn't able to take up the case of the faulty 'new' clutch with the seller as I'd bought it many years previously from for my stock of SIMCA bits. I went through the, 'Is the centre plate sticking on the splines' but that was quite free.

Good info there cheers. the clutch friction plate and cover are both NOS items but as you had could be faulty. I guess i will be able to tell more once its removed. Ive prepped the engine for removal now so hopefully itll be in the garage this evening once the kids are asleep and i can have a proper look at it all.

I think you problems id the lack of ease of movement on the friction plate sticking to the input shaft.
Also when the the clutch is apart can you move the plate on the pressure plate face without any of the clutch plate hitting the pressure plate?

SCHOOL BOY ERROR.
yep clutch friction plate would not move freely on the input shaft. Removed cleaned up with a wire wheel and a light amount of grease saw it sliding up and down like a professional pole dancer.
All refitted and working as it should. Busy afternoon for me and not a mistake i will make again. Thanks to all those who took the time to type out help and advice.

Not an effortless fix, but at least a free fix.

Great result, after many years and countless clutch changes I somehow managed to put the disc in the wrong way round on our minor, a mixture of relief and frustration when you find out it's something like this.

Awesome stuff!
This is a great little car, when are you hoping for a longer road test?

Hopefully the back end of next week all being well, I'm waiting for delivery of a rad fan and relay, once thats on i can panel off the rad to help force air through it. Also need to sort a temperature gauge out and a speedo at some point. Need to change out all the fluids, re torque the head and reset the valve clearances.
