Hello all,
My Wife's PT cruiser has developed an occasional issue when braking at lower speeds in that when the brake pedal will sometimes 'pulse' or almost vibrate under foot.Braking profiency doesn't seem affected, it's just a concern that something else is up.
It feels like what i would imagine ABS feels like.
Does anyone have any ideas? It is in need of a tie rod/suspension arm as it has a clunk, so this will be being replaced, but could it be owt else?
It still happens when the traction control is turned off.
thanks in advance!

Hi, It sounds like a drum is oval or a disc is warped. Both produce the same effect of pushing the fluid back up to the pedal in pulses, by the action or the high and low spots on the linings. It's usually most noticeable at slow speeds.

I did think about it being a warped disc, but it is very intermittent with no varying in intensity regardless of speed or pressure applied to the brake pedal...
If it were a disc it should it in theory be constantly there and variable in intensity?

Sounds like your abs pick up ring on your driveshaft/drum is damaged or corroded and split.the renault clio and scenic suffer with this and has similar symptoms.worth jacking it up and slowly turning the wheel whilst inspecting with a nice bright torch.

Almost certainly a cracked reluctor ring or air gap / contamination at the back if it's a drum set up .

It's a toothed ring on the outer end of the drive shaft on front wheel drive... Just behind the disc The rings either corrode or crack due to ageing/rust. This tells the asb pickup what speed the wheels turning at in relation to vehicle travel
When slowing to a stop a crack will indicate a skid and kick in the abs. It's usually noticeable at slow speeds
If you're competant with the spanners the rings can be got off ebay for a couple of quid. There's a few YouTube vids on how to change reluctor rings. It's an easy task once the hubs swung out the way of the drive shaft end

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

Brilliant, thanks a lot guys.
In the mean time is there any risk in continuing to drive the car?

It'll be ok to use, it's just the abs working when it doesn't need to be.
