Here's the formula.... (9-5 diesel estate with dead gearbox + exceptionally uncooperative warranty company) + (significant reduction in annual mileage x unleaded at close to £1/litre) = 9-5 Aero estate OK, I know it's not got as much torque as the (chipped) diesel had, it's going to need super unleaded, and the factory sat nav discs are made of unobtanium, and it's an auto, but it has flappy paddles on the wheel and the seats are both heated and cooled. Tyres are a bit rough, but I'll swap the winters over to it before getting the rims it's on cleaned up then choosing new tyres when it warms up a bit. Got it from DCA Saab, just round the corner from me. They've looked after this one for a few years; just didn't have the time to go shopping for a replacement for the old one. New gearbox £1500; offered £1200 for the car with the gearbox as is; Aero bought for £1500. £300 to change, MoT up on the old one (which is actually six years younger than the Aero) meant man maths won and I'm behind the wheel of a sports car.... Now to check out what it will cost me to get it chipped. Happy days.

your maths are impeccable.
i guess you've already been signposted to Karl (Noob Tune) for mapping?.
i like DCA - i've bought parts from them and had work done by them and been very happy indeed. Not that long ago i had an emergency clutch replacement, sump drop, d/pipe swap and quick Tech2 done by them - i supplied the d/pipe and clutch but the bill was (a lot) less than one might have expected. only "gripe" was that i'd brimmed the loan car, expecting to be using it for a couple of days, on the way back to work in Reading but then got a call mid afternoon telling me that my car was ready for collection !
if you stray onto UKSaabs please don't let Si (Saabotage) know that you have this - he's been looking for an Aero Wagon in this colour and spec for as long as i can recall

i've got the 2006 model, standard 260bhp, there's a company in holland that remaps them to about 290bhp, then in stage 2 to about 310. very fun cars to drive, fantastic behavior on the road (especially with the aero sport suspension pack) and truly a wolf in sheeps clothing!
i imagine that parts and spares must come REALLY cheap in the UK? even here in belgium/holland/germany these cars are approx 3-4000euros cheaper than a same spec car from another brand.
i wish you many many happy (and fast) miles in this!
PS: are those genuine SAAB black side indicators? Mine are bright white on a black car and it's been bugging me since i bought it. Could you possibly PM me the part number of those? Thanks ahead!

Hi - been on and off UKSaabs for a while. I'll give Karl a shout once I pick up the car and get a few miles under my belt. I'm in one of DCA's courtesy cars at the moment - quarter of a tank to use up - and somehow I've got one of their 9-3's on my drive from when Alan picked up the broken 9-5.
I first used DCA when they were in Caversham and I had a 99 I needed bits for. They've looked after the old 9-5 and they look after a mate's 3 door 99T. Which is nice. Handy having them close by.

Nice looking 9-5 you've got there. Love the colour, wheels etc, looks just right. I'm guessing you're already aware of dropping the sump to clean out any sludge at each oil change, but thought I'd mention it all the same.
Nice to see yet another Saab owner on here.

It was done a couple of services ago. Used those 99 arches I sent you a while ago?

Nice one. Got a build thread going? A pal round the corner has a black 99T 3 door.

I haven't started one yet. When the weather improves and the nights pull out a bit so I can get down the lockup after work to carry on with the Saabs, then I'll take some pics and start one.
99T 3dr, nice. I sold mine 2 years ago to make room and pay for the Silver 2dr 75 EMS which is pretty much the exact car I was searching for, apart from being a 75 instead of a 74 (like my parents had when I was a sprog.

I have one like this but in dark grey - like you, I thought they were just too cheap not to. Had it a couple of months and love it. Given all the stories about torque steer, sloppy handling etc, it's been much better than I expected, especially for a big estate. Also great for overtaking.

Still got this old thing. Part of my impeccable logic in buying it vs another diesel was my mileage was going to reduce. Mmmmm - just done around 25k between MoT's. The first photo flatters it. The PO's engaged in sonic parking and used the wing mirrors to trim hedges and small trees. Every panel has marks on them or minor dents. Did a few minor bits - new runners for the driver's window and a replacement cup holder removed a couple of minor gripes. I liked the thing, but wasn't convinced it was a keeper. However, I accidentally bought a few interesting bits off eBay. A Hirsch 3" down pipe and sports cat came with a 3" exhaust system. I also picked up a bigger Hirsch intercooler. An £80 remap on a spare ECU plus a 3.5 bar fuel pressure regulator gives a very reliable 295 bhp and 440 Nm of torque. A big bag of poly bushes and better quality strut top mounts got it driving without clonking or squirming. Sump was dropped again for my peace of mind, the latest crankcase ventilation kit fitted, some crank oil seals which were in one piece rather than two, and hey presto, a big old barge that went very quickly and mostly, still looked like a shed. All be it, a very rapid shed which was now doing 32 mpg in mixed, spirited driving. Not unhappy with that. Maybe this is a keeper. Not sure I chose the right colour for the cam cover. A few more bits to sort out - replaced a leaky AC pipe and regassed AC - a leaky PAS pipe sorted. And a new turbo to replace the smoky one. Rear discs and pads. All pretty inexpensive. Then the wheels dilemma. And tyres. Eventually picked up a very scabby set of these.... .....and after a refurb and colour change and a set of Pirelli P Zero Nero's we had this What else? Pressed plates fitted into Hirsch plate holders Oil leaks then retuned with a vengeance. Eventually the head came off - a leak in the far corner was turning the underneath of the car and my driveway into an oil slick. The OG gasket was only just holding on - some signs that the combustion sealing rings were starting to separate. So far, so good. Oil appears to be staying inside the engine. Lovely car, but it still looks like a shed.

I think these are cool things but I think I'm the only person in the world who struggled with the seats? I'm fairly tall and couldn't get the headrest to go up enough so ended up sticking into the top of my spine

So - the leak from the head gasket continued. Back in to be fixed - whist it was apart I had the timing chain and balance chain changed (made a huge difference, the engine sounds much better...timing chain was OK, the balance chain much, much less than OK.) Fitted a secondhand head off a 110k Aero being broken and bingo, no more leaks. So far.
Tomorrow I'm putting new front discs and pads on and flushing the brake fluid.
I'm now in so deep with this thing, I'm starting to think about getting it painted. Tonight I'm off to look at an Aero in the same colour being broken - the owner tells me the panels are good - might end up spending yet more on this thing to get it looking as good as it goes. Shoot me now.
