Looking at alternative engine options since I sold my small block. Love the noise the Alfa V6 makes, it's pretty light and the polished intake looks oh so pretty. But. After googling for a few hours, I cannot find anyone using one in a traditional RWD application with a normal gearbox and not the one mounted out back like a 75. Anyone have any other experience? Halp?

What about something using the VW/AUDI vr6 ? I think that was a Alfa engine to start with many many moons ago ? Something like that from a Audi ?

Damnit... Nearly scored an Rx8 box a month ago for, curse word all. I have no idea how the transaxle business on an Alfa works so wasn't even sure a bellhousing adaptor would work. Now I know it can, onwards and upwards. Thanks.

The Alfa busso v6 engine was never mounted to anything factory that didn't have either FWD or transaxle gearbox....... Except the Alfa Six......... But they are like hens teeth. Though saying that seen a few cars with transfer plates, mounting them to various other front RWD gearboxes. This ones mounted to an Alfa 105 series 5 speed box Alfa six flywheel housing to getrag box

I'd try and rx8 box I've just spent ages mounting an s3 1.8t engine to a 350z gearbox. Yeah they are massively strong but was a pain in the ar@e to get to work and the boxes are getting big money now Whereas rx8 boxes are peanuts

Hi Gents, ScimJim alerted me to this thread - that's my Scimitar in the pics. At the moment the alfa engine (from a 156) is mated to that MX5 6 speed box via a plywood adaptor, but it is a workable design with the starter motor in the right place and the bolt holes missing each other etc. I am having a clutch made to suit, I hope. I don't want to say for sure on this yet as it is too early to say whether / how exactly this will work out. It's not trivial because the alfa uses a pull clutch and the MX5 is a push clutch. The gearbox is the same as the RX8, Lexus IS200 but the front casting (bellhousing plus part of the gearbox) are different as are the ratios. I wanted a 6 speed because the Alfa 156 was 6 speed and it suits the characteristics of the engine. The MX5 6 speed box is often criticised because it has only the same ratio in top as the 5 speed, the main difference being an extra short first gear that isn't very useful, but the Scimitar has a very tall rear axle ratio so it should be ok. Alfa engine is very charismatic to drive, that's why I wanted to use it. That lovely intake system does put the throttle in an inconvenient place at the back, I've got an angled throttle body from a BMW although it needs some modification as it is a traction control unit and so it is sprung open, cable closed which would make it difficult to drive. Another example to look at - the best one is www.alfadax.com where he has used a honda s2000 box. this will take more power but doesn't have a sliding tailshaft so wouldn't suit a live axle setup. Somewhere on locostbuilders there is someone who has fitted a ford type 9 box by making an adaptor between the alfa bellhousing and the ford box. This would make life a lot simpler but I didn't want a 5 speed box with a long magic wand gear knob. Cheers, Gav

Thanks for your in depth reply, rx8 6 speed will probably be the way I go, as long as the stick can be put in a relatively sensible place.
I guess the only real question left is this. Is it worth swapping into a fairly light bit of old British tin?
I'm thinking a 3.0 24v would help it move along sufficiently quickly for my needs, even at stock power levels. Much as I want to V8 it, there's not enough room, I need to get dimensions of an Alfa lump really.
