Hi Guys, Thought I'd do a little post on here as i think there is lots of uses for this bit of kit making parts for cars. So I like designing and making wooden things like phone stands, chairs, lamps etc and having used other people to do the CNC cutting for me i decided to buy my own machine. Now i didn't have a big budget or a massive amount of space. Having watched a Youtube video i found the X Carve made by inventables in the US. Now much smarter people than me i'm sure could make there own machine from scratch however i'm not that cleaver or have that much free time so i bought a kit. www.inventables.comAfter a week my order was dispatched. After then paying a sizable customs bill it then arrived with me in two boxes, one for the frame rails and one with all the components. The router itself i ordered from the UK, its a Dewalt 611 trim router off the top of my head its 900w. Once all the bits had arrived the build could start. The frame was very easy to put together, the instructions are very clear. sorry i don't have many pictures of the build. Once finished I moved it in to the garage and did my first cut using the Inventables template And now i've nocked these up as little Christmas gifts My hope is as i get more project ideas i'll start to sell parts that i've made and also cut things for people. Its a brilliant bit of kit but i would say getting the machine set up perfectly takes time, it really should be thought of as a project in its self. Alex.

Cool.
I've been looking at CNC machines as well, but I'd like mine to be sturdy enough to machine mild steel and alloy, so I think I'll be making my own, but with an interchangeable head, so it can also be used for 3D printing with a few tweaks. Like you, I don't have any experience in it, but that's never stopped me before.
I blame @johnnybravo and his RX2. All that machine work has made me want to try bits and bobs for myself.

That's a neat little set up. What software are you running? Mach 3?

At the moment i'm just using the free cloud based software which inventables run called Easel. Its only 2 1/2D. I was looking at Meshcam last night but i want to get the machine dialed in first before i start trying out software.

This looks really good (until I followed the link and saw the cost), I could have hours of fun with it.
Can you cut other materials like perspex with it (I guess it's a case of a suitable router cutter?).
Will be interesting to see what you can produce.

Well i've been doing bits and bobs leading up to Christmas. Most people received some form of routed present including this for PhoenixCapri And these clocks which i cut all on the X-carve Since then i've been working on some upgrades for the machine as the ally extrusions are a little flexible over a 1m distance. I've installed a 5mm thick steel plate between the two rails on the x axis and brackets on the Y axis to support it in the middle. Also i've used two clear plastic strips to cover the Y axis rails to stop them getting covered in dust and swarf This is all with an aim to start cutting Aluminum and brass/cooper plates as well as increasing the speed i can cut wood at. I'm starting to come up with idea's for bits i can cut for my mini and other cars, including Lexan windows. The machine will cut most things, Steel at a pinch but i wouldn't really recommend it.

Done a little job for a friend. Got a load more to do but see what you think. Can you tell what it is? [ Are they race track outlines? Cool idea!
|

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault

Yep,
If you can name all the tracks you win a prize..... well not a prize but geek points.

1st one was Silverstone?
I needed an MDF riser a few years ago and no-one sells them (To mount soundbar under a TV) In the end, a local CNC shop agreed to do it but it cost me £70 and only used about £5 worth of MDF. Its basically a flat piece of mdf with 2 sides 6" high - and the front has a '[' cut out for the bar to sit in. Seeing this makes me want a new one with some sort of logo cut out beneath the bar!
On a serious note, have you thought about making a few & selling on Ebay? I genuinely think that they would make a pretty packet for someone with a cnc machine. There are a few 'Soundbar risers' on ebay but they aren't what is really needed (More of a spacer/tv raiser than a mount for a bar)

I'd be happy to make you up some form of riser up for a heck of a lot less than £70. If you've got a drawing of the sort of thing you want i'll see what i can do. I'm limited on size on my machine to about 800mm. Putting a logo in should be a problem. drop me a PM if you want.
