The headlights on my car just don't give enough light for my driving which is mainly on unlit lanes. I DON'T want to upgrade to Osram Night Breaker bulbs or similar well known branded, no matter how good they are, due to the cost (would need 6 bulbs - 2 x H1, 2 x H7 & another one of each as spares). On eBay there are plenty of standard 55w Xenon bulbs which claim to be brighter which tempt me. Are such Xenon (proper Xenon - not just blue tinted ) actually a worthy improvement over standard bulbs ? Cheers. Paul H

What do the reflectors and lenses look like? Usually old, dirty and corroded reflectors and cloudy lenses seem to be the main problem.

Do you think Night Breakers are that expensive, I've bought them through eBay, just checked £12 for 2xH1 and £14 for 2 x H7 link. I'd just keep the original bulbs as temporary spares until you can order some more Night Breakers. I've fitted Night Breakers to my Discovery 2 made a big difference. Still to fit them as main beams on the Alfa as I think I need to take out the whole headlight fitting to get to the back. Mark

the cheapie ebay one will just be blue tinted cheap halogen bulbs , not the special high tech +110% mega spec they claim
have you checked for voltage drop at the bulb wires , a small drop can effect the output alot
another forum they're fitting led spotlamps that seem to be rather good

When I fitted the Halfords Xenon items they were an improvement over stock bulbs but the performance did not last with the bulb. It is not to say that they were like candles in the headlights after a while but they were not great either.

Everything (lense, reflector & voltage) are perfect. In "normal" road use the lights are OK but as I said most of my driving is down unlit lanes where their failings are noticeable. There is already factory wiring in place for fog lights so I've connected a OE switch on the dash to the other end of the harness and found there is live feed whenever side lights are on so am going with a pair of aux driving lights that are easily / quick removable in Spring.

Fitted Osram Silverstar and new headlight units to the Herald in 2008 and they're still in the car which gets used daily in all weathers. They were as bright as my 100w driving lamps and after people saw them they fitted the same. I've just changed the headlight units themselves, the bulbs are still the originals. I've had no luck with Osram Nightbreakers and nor have friends.
The Acclaim has Halfords all weather ones which look blue with the lights off and yellow with the lights on. Nice and bright and absolutely brilliant on cutting down the glare from road signs and snow.

If the bulbs blow in the Escort it's what I plan to use .
