I'm after some advice. I want to get my dad a diecast replica of the lorry my grandad used to drive as a Xmas present.
I have found the correct corgi model but the colour is wrong. How would I go about repainting it?

My Dad used to repaint old Dinky cars. He knew a guy with a shop who would pay him with models he didn't have.
Because of the very rough condition of them he used to strip them down, remove all of the old paint with stripper, repair any damage and then re-paint them using a full size car spray gun using cellulose paint. Any bits like lights or stripes were normally hand painted.
These were old 40's and 50's Dinky toys and were fairly basic, drilled out rivets were replaced with small rivets that were glued in place, if yours is a new one it might be screwed together. The main reason I would suggest stripping the paint off is that the more paint you put on the more detail you loose. You could use an airbrush or aerosol can.
Before reproduction stickers were available Letraset rub off letters were about the only option although with photoshop and modern printer materials you could probably make your own.

Making my own decals is no problem as I work in a graphics studio for a living. I will order the model today and see how its held together when it gets here. I have found one model kit but the quality doesn't seem very good so I'd rather buy a good quality model and customise it

I'm pretty sure there are some Bedfords like that amongst the ones my Dad has done but they are very basic with no windows etc. They are all wrapped up carefully in boxes at my Mums, will have to have a look at whats there sometime.

Some years back I came across a model tanker in my Old Mans livery, I got a transparent display box and then had my son make an old black and white pic of his old garage frontage fit as a back drop. He loved it and it was on his desk at home until he died. It is the sort of present that involves some handy work and love that only the best presents have. Good luck with the painting.

Dinky made a covered army Bedford which would make a good period conversion and there easy to strip down, despite being donkeys years old there's still loads of them about and there cheap as chips! This is currently on eBay

I used to do this all the time, pretty easy to strip down an old diecast. Preparation is the key, once you've primed it carefully rub it down with 1500 wet n dry before painting. Getting a perfect primed surface is the key to a lovely paint job. I used halfords rattle cans and got some great results.

Cheers for the heads up retrolegends this is what I'm currently looking into getting as it is more detailed Or I have the option to buy this kit, this would save time in the long run but is more expensive and is not a brand I have ever heard of? decisions, decisions........

I've done this with a few Corgi/Dinky's, paint stripper, wire wool or similar and make sure it's well washed. I also used a dremel with a small wire brush attachment, a scale version of what you'd do on a 1:1 model resto_2 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr resto_3 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr resto_5 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr resto_7 by Mark Palmer, on Flickr One day I might even finish it....

I use caustic soda, in a plastic tub. Its easy to use and removes paint very easily.
I'll get some pictures of my 'code 3's'! I own a real Bedford like the one pictured too, although mine is the RL a 4x4 version!

Halfords aerosols, that's Land Rover Epsom Green I think. Could probably do with a polish and lacquer.
