1989 Mercedes Benz 190E 2.6 Automatic in Almondine Red Metallic with the mushroom leather interior and wood trim with 102K on the clock. Registered 01st August 1989. 2.6 litre straight 6 - non-catalyst model so 166 bhp.
Spec : Outside Temp Guage ( screen has bled ), Leather Steering Wheel, Front seat pockets, Electric Sunroof ( fully working ), Rear Headrests, Front Armrest, Electric Windows x4, Tinted Windows ( banded windscreen ), Headlight Wipers, Bigger fuel tank. etc...
History : MOT ( with no advisories ) until 8th April 2016. Only 2 Former keepers on V5 document ( 1st owner 08/89-07/08 was an insurance broker's 3rd car, 2nd owner 07/08-05/11 was a copper, 3rd owner a mercedes specialist mechanic ). 8 Mercedes Stamps until 1997, 1 independant garage stamp then a bit of a gap, an independant garage invoice/stamp for a service, transmission fluid, spark plugs and a propshaft flange in 2009 ( 89899 miles ) then a mercedes invoice for spark plugs, distributor and cap in 2010, then service stamps for 2011, 2013, invoice for new fuel pump and filter 2014 whilst owned by a mercedes specialist mechanic and i fully serviced her in February 2015 along with new plugs ( exchanged for the incorrect resistor ones fitted ), I also had a new front section of exhaust fitted as well as a new ball joint ( Lemforder ), new hydraulic lifter ( INA ) which was audible once the exhaust became much quieter ! It also had a citric acid coolant system flush and four tyres fitted as the PO had fitted oversized tyres. 8 MOT certificates.
Items replaced by PO : New Radiator ( almost £400!?! ) , rear brake discs, pads and shoes, water pump, metal thermostat housing, drive belt and all pulleys, 4 suspension springs, plug leads, rotor and coil, vacuum pipes for central locking, re-undersealed chassis, battery, alternator. I am sure some of this is accurate as the alternator for instance looks very shiny and clean but the underseal doesn't look all that fresh if you ask me.
Known faults: Drivers side electric rear window not working - can't remember if this is just from the front switch or either switches, it has the familiar problem of a whining diff on overun, Speedometer is inaccurate PO replaced speedo cable so don't know if this is why ?,
It used to start on the button and run perfectly from cold or warm but after i tuned her up on a gas analyser due to running lean ( on the same day i had the OVP relay re-flowed ) the cold start isn't operating correctly - I will try to have a look at this as it was perfect before i meddled with it .
Dash wood trim has been removed to be stuck back on but has still not managed to magically re-attached itself.
At some time the bumpers inserts, mirrors and front grill have been colour coded but are at various stages of peeling ( + a cracked rear bumper strip )
There is a small oil weep which my mechanic thought was coming from behind the front engine cover but haven't investigated this as it is very minor.
Probably the worst fault is that contrary to the PO assuring me that there was no rust anywhere on the car it has suffered from the common leaky rear window which has created a hole at the lower edge and then has rotted the nearside inner boot panel so would benefit from a new inner wheelarch ( part is about £40 ) and the outer rear quarter either repairing or replacing ( about £ 80 ) I intended to have these jobs carried out and to keep her until the inevitable climb in values arrives but i am about to leave my unit so could do with the space.
Also the ABS light comes on once you get above about 7mph, i intended to test the sensors ( 2 on front + 1 on back axle ) but never got round to it, if you brake hard it seems to kick the peddle back which may mean the abs is actually working but i am not certain of this.
Good bits : Looks very nice from a few feet away and on photos, the wheels are in a fantastic condition and are well shod with quality tyres, Drives very well with good pick up and a smooth gearbox, No knocks or bangs, Attracts plenty of attention, Interior is in a very good condition - a phone kit has been fitted at some time judging by the screw holes in the centre console,
As i have spent over 20 years dealing in brand new cars latterly including Jaguars and Merc's i tend to overstate faults on what is after all a 26 year old car but i believe that honesty is the best policy and anyone who is sensible and wants a good base for a small renovation of a low mileage nice spec car that drives very well would i believe be happy with the car. It would also appear that i can see things that others cannot ( including the PO ) so can give a comprehensive vehicle appraisal, I just hope i haven't put anyone off with this policy.
I know it is worth more in parts due to the interior and bodykit but that would be a shame to do to her !
Not currently taxed but i can borrow some trade plates for any test drives ( not an invitation for joyrides BTW Ha! ) Please don't offer bids without seeing her unless you are prepared to pay a deposit there and then if we can agree a sensible price, viewings are welcome and can be accompanied by a cuppa n chinwag with any fellow old school motor fans !
